NNeil Armstrong was born in Wapakoneta, Ohio, on August 5, 1930. After serving in the Korean War and then finishing college, he joined the organization that would become NASA. He joined the astronaut program in 1962 and was command pilot for his first mission, Gemini VIII, in 1966. He was spacecraft commander for Apollo 11, the first manned lunar mission, and the first man to walk on the moon. He died in 2012.
Military Service:
Astronaut Neil Armstrong developed a fascination with flight at an early age and earned his student pilot's license when he was 16. In 1947, Armstrong began his studies in aeronautical engineering at Purdue University on a U.S. Navy scholarship.
His studies, however, were interrupted in 1949 when he was called to serve in the Korean War. A U.S. Navy pilot, Armstrong flew 78 combat missions during this military conflict. He left the service in 1952, and returned to college. A few years later, Armstrong joined the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA), which later became the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). For this government agency he worked in a number of different capacities, including serving as a test pilot and an engineer. He tested many high-speed aircraft, including the X-15, which could reach a top speed of 4,000 miles per hour.

Neil Armstrong, the American astronaut who made history by becoming the first man on the moon, died today at the age of 82.
'We are heartbroken to share the news that Neil Armstrong has passed away following complications resulting from cardiovascular procedures,' Armstrong's family said in a statement.
Armstrong underwent heart surgery earlier this month.
'While we mourn the loss of a very good man, we also celebrate his remarkable life and hope that it serves as an example to young people around the world to work hard to make their dreams come true, to be willing to explore and push the limits, and to selflessly serve a cause greater than themselves,' his family said. Armstrong died in Cincinnati, Ohio, according to a NASA spokesman.
NASA administrator Charles Bolden said in a statement, “As long as there are history books, Neil Armstrong will be included in them. As we enter this next era of space exploration, we do so standing on the shoulders of Neil Armstrong. We mourn the passing of a friend, fellow astronaut and true American hero.'

Neil Armstrong is a boyhood hero of mine. He is one of my heroes not because he was the first man to walk on the moon, although that has something to do with it. He is my hero because he came from my hometown of St. Marys, Ohio.
In 1969, nothing was bigger and more exciting in the world than what NASA was doing. President John F. Kennedy said that we would put a man on the moon, and the man they picked was born in my hometown—to a 14-year-old kid like me, that was about as cool as it got.
I remember an English teacher, Zula McIntosh, talking about having Armstrong as a student at East Elementary before his family moved to nearby Wapakoneta, Ohio, following his fourth grade year. The doctor who delivered him into this world was an old friend to the family. According to local historians, his family was one of the first to settle in St. Marys, so his ties and roots were very strong in our little community of 8,000 residents. And this was the first man on the moon.
In a scene that was played out in nearly every household in the United States, my family was glued to the television when the Lunar Module made its final approach to the moon’s surface. The living room was dark, with just the light from the television illuminating our faces. We cheered when the LEM (Lunar Excursion Module) landed safely, and waited what seemed endless hours for the lunar module door to pop open. And then, there it was. The grainy photos that history has welc

Here's something that happens once in a blue moon. A blue moon!
The standard bearer of rare events occurs again Aug. 31, its first appearance since March 2010 and its last 'til July 2015. Just what is a blue moon? Nothing terribly significant, actually; it's simply a second full moon in a single month. Full moons appear every 29 days due to the regularity of the lunar orbit. Overlaying our nonuniform yearly calendar onto this cycle causes the rare, and totally arbitrary, blue-moon-two-moon coincidence.
More lackluster lunar news: Blue moons aren't actually blue, either. Nobody's even sure where that azure appellation came from. Or what the blue moon may portend as they are considered good luck to some, very bad luck to others. Either way, it seems appropriate that the memorial for recently deceased Neil Armstrong, the moon's first human visitor, will be on the same day.
So Friday night, be sure you grab a brew, pop on an old Elvis ballad, toast Armstrong, and enjoy this lunar rarity!

One of the biggest and the greatest achievements of human race came as a result of what was termed as the space race between United States of America and the Soviet Union. The ambitious challenge of then President of the United States, John F. Kennedy to land a man on the Moon and returning safe to earth was achieved overwhelmingly when Neil Armstrong took the first giant leap for mankind by becoming the first person to walk on the surface of the moon along with fellow astronaut Edwin Aldrin. This incredible space triumph by NASA was watched by over 600 million people on earth and rest is history!!
