Google dedicated a doodle to Italian physician and educator Maria Montessori on Friday to celebrate her 142th birthday.
Google home page appeared to be very distinctive and the doodle was designed with educational tools used in schools throughout the world to teach toddlers in Montessori classes.
Maria Tecla Artemesia Montessori was born on August 31, 1870, in Chiaravalle, Italy. She was a noted humanitarian and devout Catholic best known for the philosophy of education which bears her name. Her educational method focused on a child's ingenious potential and gives emphasis on independence.
Maria was the first Italian woman to get a degree in medicine. She graduated from the University of Rome in 1896.
She opened her first preschool for children in 1907 and led to the opening of other Montessori schools. She travelled to different countries, including India from 1939 to 1946, to disseminate her educational system.
Montessori died of a cerebral haemorrhage in Netherlands at the age of 81 on May 6, 1952. .

Saul Bass (May 8, 1920 -- April 25, 1996) was an American graphic designer and filmmaker, best known for his design of motion picture title sequences, film posters, and corporate logos.
During his 40-year career Bass worked for some of Hollywood's most prominent filmmakers, including Alfred Hitchcock, Otto Preminger, Billy Wilder, Stanley Kubrick and Martin Scorsese. Among his most famous title sequences are the animated paper cut-out of a heroin addict's arm for Preminger's The Man with the Golden Arm, the credits racing up and down what eventually becomes a high-angle shot of a skyscraper in Hitchcock's North by Northwest, and the disjointed text that races together and apart in Psycho.
Bass designed some of the most iconic corporate logos in North America, including the AT&T 'bell' logo in 1969, as well as AT&T's 'globe' logo in 1983 after the breakup of the Bell System. He also designed Continental Airlines' 1968 'jetstream' logo and United Airlines' 1974 'tulip' logo which became some of the most recognized airline industry logos of the era. The petri dish helps scientists and researchers to better identify bacteria and the diseases they caused.
Today, Google via their home page doodle celebrates the birth of Julius Richard Petri who invented the petri dish.
Julius Richard Petri was born on May 31, 1852 and died on December 20, 1921.
He would have been 160 years old today.
Petri studied medicine at the Kaiser-Wilhelm-Academy for Military Physicians in Berlin . He then went on to work at the Imperial Health Office with Robert Koch who is considered the father of modern bacteriology.
Google's doodle features six petri dishes which when one clicks on the play button are swabbed by a hand. Images of bacteria grow and spread in the dishes. These bacteria go on to form the alphabeths that spell Google.
It is interesting to note that Petri was not the first to use agar, a substance made from algae to grow bacteria but he invented the standard dish in which it was done.
The petri dish helps scientists and researchers to better identify bacteria and the diseases they caused. Petri dishes later moved from the laboratory to classrooms where they are used by every student of biology for various experiments.

Today’s Google Doodle is special. The musical doodle highlights French musician Claude Debussy’s famous composition ‘Claire de lune’. The romantic composition with Debussy’s music is one of the best Doodles created by Google in recent times.
The animated Doodle paints a quaint river-side scene in the moonlight with the act progressing through cities and finally culminating in a tender, romantic moment. Debussy’s Claire de lune tune plays in the background as the scene is progressing. Lights in the houses and street-lights flicker on and off in the doodle giving an illusion of a passing night. The clouds move around playing with the full moon.
The river-side is lined by a road and as ships pass the river, there are cyclists and motor-men moving on the road. The scene incorporates elements like smoke rising from chimneys and flickering lights to match the strings of the piano. The ships finally give way to two people rowing boats. As they near each other, it begins to rain. While the first boatman looks around helplessly, the second catches up and opens a read umbrella, sheltering them both.
The red umbrella is the only spot of colour in the entire doodle (apart from the initial balloons) which is set in the dark. ‘Claire de lune’ in French, meaning the ‘The Bright Moon’, is set in the night with only the moonlight and the occasional street-light flicker showing the proceedings.
