ചൊവ്വയിലെ ജീവന്റെ സാന്നിധ്യം കണ്ടെത്തുകയാണു ലക്ഷ്യം. മാർസ് 2020 എന്നു പേരിട്ട പേടകം പക്ഷേ എവിടെ ഇറക്കുമെന്നതു സംബന്ധിച്ചു കഴിഞ്ഞ നാലു വർഷമായി ഗവേഷകർ കൊണ്ടുപിടിച്ച ചർച്ചയിലായിരുന്നു. 250 കോടി ഡോളർ ചെലവിൽ നിർമിക്കുന്ന പേടകം ചൊവ്വയിലെ നദീതട പ്രദേശമായ ‘ജെസീറോ ക്രേറ്ററി’ലായിരിക്കും ഇറങ്ങുക. 2021 ഫെബ്രുവരിയിൽ ഇതു ജെസീറോയിൽ വന്നിറങ്ങുമെന്ന പ്രതീക്ഷയിലാണു ഗവേഷണം തുടരുന്നത്.
ആറു വർഷം മുൻപു ചൊവ്വയിൽ വന്നിറങ്ങിയ ക്യൂരിയോസിറ്റി റോവറിനേക്കാളും ഭാരിച്ച ഉത്തരവാദിത്തമാണ് മാർസ് 2020യെ കാത്തിരിക്കുന്നത്.
ജെസീറോയിൽ വന്നിറങ്ങുന്ന പേടകത്തിന് ഒരൊറ്റ ലക്ഷ്യമേയുള്ളൂ– ചൊവ്വയിൽ ഏതെങ്കിലും വിധത്തിൽ എന്നെങ്കിലും ജീവൻ നിലനിന്നിരുന്നോയെന്നു കണ്ടെത്തുക. 350 മുതൽ 390 കോടി വരെ വർഷങ്ങൾ പഴക്കമുള്ളതായിരിക്കും ഈ ജീവന്റെ അംശമെന്നത് മറ്റൊരു സത്യം. എന്നാൽ ഭൂമിയിൽ എങ്ങനെയാണു ജീവനുണ്ടായത് എന്നതിന്റെ ഉൾപ്പെടെ ഉത്തരം ചൊവ്വയിൽ ഒളിഞ്ഞിരിപ്പുണ്ടെന്നാണു ഗവേഷകരുടെ നിഗമനം.

മഞ്ഞ് മൂടിയ ഒരു വന്‍ഗര്‍ത്തത്തിന്റെ ചിത്രമാണ് പുറത്തുവന്നിരിക്കുന്നത്. ചൊവ്വയുടെ ഉത്തര ധ്രുവത്തിലെ കൊറൊലോവ് ഗര്‍ത്തമാണിത്. 81.4 കിലോമീറ്റര്‍ വ്യാസത്തിലുള്ള വൃത്താകൃതിയിലാണ് ഇത് നിലകൊള്ളുന്നത്. ഉയര്‍ന്നു നില്‍ക്കുന്ന ഒരു കുന്നിനുമുകളില്‍ കിടക്കുന്ന തടാകം പോലെയാണ് ഇവിടം.നാസ ചൊവ്വയുടെ നിരവധി ഉപരിതല ചിത്രങ്ങള്‍ പുറത്തുവിട്ടിട്ടുണ്ടെങ്കിലും ഇങ്ങനെ ഒരു ചിത്രം ഇതാദ്യമാണ്.
ഭൂമിയിലെ പോലെ തന്നെ ചൊവ്വയിലും ഋതു മാറ്റങ്ങള്‍ ഉണ്ട്.
അവിടത്തെ തണുപ്പുകാലത്ത് മഞ്ഞ് രൂപപ്പെടാറുണ്ട്. എന്നാല്‍ കോറൊലോവ് ഗര്‍ത്തം ചൊവ്വയുടെ ഭൂതകാലത്തുണ്ടായ എന്തെങ്കിലും സ്വാധീനത്തിന്റെ ഫലമായി ഉണ്ടായതാവാം എന്നാണ് കരുതുന്നത്. സോവിയറ്റ് റോക്കറ്റ് എഞ്ചിനീയര്‍ സെര്‍ഗെയ് കോറോലോവിന്റെ പേരാണ് ഈ സ്ഥലത്തിന് നല്‍കിയിരിക്കുന്നത്.
'തണുത്ത കെണി' എന്നാണ് ഈ പ്രതിഭാസത്തെ വിളിക്കുന്നത്.
ഗര്‍ത്തത്തിന് വലിയ ആഴമുണ്ട്. അത് രണ്ട് കിലോമീറ്ററിലധികം വരുമെന്നാണ് കണക്കാക്കുന്നത്. ഇതിന് മുകളില്‍ രൂപപ്പെട്ട മഞ്ഞ് പ്രതലത്തിന് 60 കിലോമീറ്റര്‍ വ്യാസവും 1.8 കിലോമീറ്റര്‍ കനവുമുണ്ടെന്നും 2,200 ചതുരശ്ര കിലോമീറ്റര്‍ മഞ്ഞാണ് ഈ ഗര്‍ത്തത്തില്‍ ഉള്ളതെന്നാണ് കരുതപ്പെടുന്നു.
ഈ മഞ്ഞിന് മുകളിലൂടെ വായു കടന്നുപോവുമ്പോള്‍ അതി ശൈത്യം കാരണം ആ വായു മഞ്ഞിന് മുകളില്‍ ഒരു കവചമായി മാറുന്നുവെന്നും ആ കവചം മഞ്ഞിനെ ചൂടുകാറ്റില്‍ നിന്നും സംരക്ഷിച്ച് നിര്‍ത്തുകയാണെന്നും ഗവേഷകര്‍ പറയുന്നു.
അതായത് ഇത് എല്ലാ ഋതുക്കളിലും നിലനില്‍ക്കുന്നൊരു പ്രതിഭാസമാണ്.

It is an illustrated image, fashioned in the style of space-related images that often used to adorn school notebooks in the late 80s and 90s.
Mangalyaan, which was blasted off into space on November 5 last year, entered the Mars orbit on September 24. It has been one of the biggest scientific achievements for India, putting ISRO, India's space agency, in the select group of four space agencies that have successfully sent a probe to Mars orbit.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed the Mars mission as a major achievement. 'History has been created today. We have achieved the near impossible. I congratulate all ISRO scientists and all my fellow Indians on this historic achievement,' he said on the day Mangalyaan entered the Mars orbit. 'The odds were stacked against us. Of the 51 missions attempted across the world so far, a mere 21 had succeeded. But we have prevailed.'
