കേസിലെ പ്രതികളെ വിട്ടയക്കാനുള്ള തമിഴ്‌നാട് സര്‍ക്കാരിന്റെ തീരുമാനം കോടതി ശരിവച്ചു. ജസ്റ്റിസ് രഞ്ജന്‍ ഗൊഗോയ് അധ്യക്ഷനായ രണ്ടംഗ ബെഞ്ചിന്റേതാണ് തീരുമാനം. പ്രതികളെ മോചിതരാക്കണമെന്ന് ആവശ്യപ്പെട്ട് കൊണ്ട് തമിഴ്‌നാട് സര്ക്കാരിന് ഗവര്‍ണറെ സമീപിക്കാമെന്നും കോടതി പറഞ്ഞു.
ഇതോടെ 27 വര്‍ഷമായി ജയിലില്‍ കഴിയുകയായിരുന്ന മുരുകന്‍, പേരറിവാളന്‍, ശാന്തന്‍, നളിനി, റോബര്‍ട്ട് പയസ്, ജയകുമാര്‍, രവിചന്ദ്രന്‍ എന്നീ പ്രതികള്‍ ജയില്‍ മോചിതരായേക്കും.പ്രതികളുടെ വധശിക്ഷ നേരത്തെ സുപ്രീംകോടതി ജീവപര്യന്തമാക്കി കുറച്ചിരുന്നു.തുടര്‍ന്ന് 2016-ല്‍ ജയലളിത സര്‍ക്കാര്‍ എല്ലാ പ്രതികളേയും വിട്ടയക്കാന്‍ തീരുമാനിച്ചു. ഭരണഘടനയുടെ 161-ാം അനുഛേദ പ്രകാരം സംസ്ഥാനങ്ങള്‍ക്കുള്ള അധികാരം ഉപയോഗിച്ചാണ്‌ എല്ലാ പ്രതികളേയും വിട്ടയക്കാനുള്ള തീരുമാനമെടുത്തത്. എന്നാല്‍ ഈ തീരുമാനത്തെ ചോദ്യം ചെയ്ത്‌കൊണ്ട് കേന്ദ്ര സര്‍ക്കാര്‍ സുപ്രീം കോടതിയെ സമീപിക്കുകയായിരുന്നു. കേന്ദ്ര ഏജന്‍സികള്‍ അന്വേഷിച്ച ഒരു കേസില്‍ സംസ്ഥാന സര്ക്കാരിന് തീരുമാനമെടുക്കാനാവില്ലെന്നായിരുന്നു കേന്ദ്രത്തിന്റെ വാദം.
