'It's an honor to be here tonight. I speak to you not as a representative of young Hollywood, but as a representative of the many millions of young Americans, particularly young women, who depend on public and nonprofit programs to help them survive.
I grew up in New York City with four siblings. My father barely made enough to get by. We moved every year, and we finally settled in a housing development for lower middle income families. We went to public schools and depended on programs for school transport and lunches, as did most of my friends. My girlfriends from high school to this day still depend on Planned Parenthood and often Medicaid for important health care services.
In 2008, less than half of all eligible voters between the ages of 18 and 24 voted. Young America, why are we only speaking with half our voice when so many issues at stake here directly affect us? You know who I'm voting for. I'm not going to tell you who to vote for. I'm here to ask you to commit to vote.

'I have seen firsthand that being president doesn't change who you are -- no -- it reveals who you are,' the first lady said Tuesday in her address to the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, North Carolina.
The crises of Obama's first term 'tested my husband in ways I never could have imagined,' she said. 'He reminds me that we are playing a long game here and that change is hard, and change is slow, and it never happens all at once.' Michelle Obama's speech, without saying Romney's name, drew subtle yet unmistakable contrasts to the Republican presidential nominee's background as the son of an executive and politician and his business career in finance. Romney, former Massachusetts governor and a co-founder of Boston-based private equity firm Bain Capital LLC, has a net worth that is estimated between $190 million and $250 million.

'With a record and a vision like that, I will not stand by and let him be bullied out of office -- and neither should you.' That line drew roaring applause from the crowd.

There's no point trying to find something wrong with Michelle Obama's speech to the Democratic National Convention. It was perfection.
From her stage presence to her delivery — from the punctuating smile to the strategic repetition of the words 'you see' — it was brilliant. The first lady ruled the first night of the convention, and that's saying something given the lineup of oratorical stars she followed, notably the Castro twins, Julian and Joaquin, respectively mayor of San Antonio and Texas congressional candidate.
No matter what one's politics, only the mingy-minded could fail to be proud of America's first lady Tuesday night. In this spirit, I submit my favorite lines of the speech, which have received scant attention. It was perhaps the most important statement of any thus far uttered in either convention and has been sorely lacking from the American conversation.
Herewith: 'He was so proud to be sending his kids to college, and he made sure we never missed a registration deadline because his check was late. You see, for my dad, that's what it meant to be a man. … That was the measure of his success in life — being able to earn a decent living that allowed him to support his family.'
