ഇരുപത്തിരണ്ടുവർഷം കൊണ്ട് പണിതുയർത്തിയ, ഏഷ്യയിലെ ഏറ്റവും വലിയ കേബിൾ പാലമാണ് വിദ്യാസാഗർ സേതു.കൊൽക്കത്തയിലെ ഹൗറ പാലത്തിനൊപ്പം മികച്ചതും പ്രസിദ്ധവുമാണ് നിർമാണചാതുര്യം കൊണ്ട് വിസ്മയിപ്പിക്കുന്ന വിദ്യാസാഗർ സേതു.1972 ലാണ് വിദ്യാസാഗർ സേതുവിന്റെ ശിലാസ്ഥാപനം അന്നത്തെ പ്രധാനമന്ത്രിയായിരുന്ന ഇന്ദിരാഗാന്ധി നിർവഹിച്ചത്. പിന്നീട് വർഷങ്ങളോളം നിർമാണങ്ങൾ ഒന്നും നടക്കാതിരുന്ന പാലത്തിന്റെ പണികൾ പുനരാരംഭിച്ചത് 1979 ലാണ്. ഏകദേശം 823 മീറ്റർ നീളത്തിൽ 35 മീറ്റർ വീതിയിലാണ് പാലം പണിതിരിക്കുന്നത്. ഒരു ഫാൻ എന്ന് തോന്നിപ്പിക്കുന്ന തരത്തിൽ, ഏകദേശം 128 മീറ്റർ ഉയരമുള്ള രണ്ടു തൂണുകളിൽ നിന്നും 152 കേബിളുകളിലാണ് പാലത്തെ ബന്ധിപ്പിച്ചു നിർത്തിയിരിക്കുന്നത്. ഇരുപത്തിരണ്ടുവർഷങ്ങൾ നീണ്ട നിർമാണപ്രവർത്തനങ്ങൾ പൂർത്തീകരിച്ച്, 1992 ഒക്ടോബർ 10 നാണ് ബംഗാളിലെ നവോത്ഥാന നായകനായ ഈശ്വരചന്ദ്ര വിദ്യാസാഗറിന്റെ നാമം നൽകി, പൊതുജനങ്ങൾക്കായി പാലം തുറന്നു കൊടുത്തത്ഹൂഗ്ലി നദിയും, ഉദയാസ്തമയങ്ങളും വളരെ വ്യക്തമായി കാണാമെന്നതുകൊണ്ടുതന്നെ ഈ പാലത്തിൽ നിന്നു കാഴ്ചകൾ കാണാൻ ധാരാളം സഞ്ചാരികളെത്താറുണ്ട്.
പൊതു, സ്വകാര്യ മേഖല സംയുക്തമായാണ് പാലത്തിന്റെ നിർമാണ പ്രവർത്തനങ്ങൾ നടത്തിയത്. രണ്ടുപതിറ്റാണ്ടിലധികം നിർമാണം നടന്ന വിദ്യാസാഗർ സേതുവിന്‌ ചെലവായത് അക്കാലത്തെ ഏറ്റവും ഭീമമായ തുകയാണ്, 388 കോടി രൂപ. ഇന്ത്യയിലെ പ്രധാന നഗരങ്ങളെയെല്ലാം ബന്ധിപ്പിക്കുന്ന ദേശീയപാതയ്ക്ക് സമീപമാണ് പാലം സ്ഥിതി ചെയ്യുന്നത്. സൈക്കിൾ സവാരിക്കാർക്ക് സൗജന്യ യാത്ര അനുവദിക്കപ്പെട്ടിട്ടുള്ള ടോൾപാലം എന്ന പ്രത്യേകതയും വിദ്യാസാഗർ സേതുവിനുണ്ട്.
