പാമ്പുകളുടെ തൊലിപ്പുറമേ ബാധിക്കുന്ന ഈ ഫംഗസ് ക്രമേണ അവയ ക്ഷീണിതരകാക്കുകയും ഇരതേടാനോ വേഗത്തില്‍ ഇഴയാനോ കഴിയാത്ത അവസ്ഥയിലെത്തിക്കുകയും ചെയ്യുന്നു.പഴയ തൊലി പോയി പുതിയ തൊലി വരുന്നത് ചില പാമ്പുകളെ രോഗത്തില്‍ നിന്നു രക്ഷപെടാന്‍ സഹായിക്കുമെങ്കിലും മിക്കവാറും പാമ്പുകളിലേക്കും ഈ ഫംഗസ് തിരികെയെത്തുന്നതായാണ് ഗവേഷകര്‍ നിരീക്ഷിച്ചത്. ക്ഷീണിതരാകുന്നതോടെ പാമ്പുകള്‍ ഭക്ഷണം ലഭിക്കാതെയോ മറ്റു മൃഗങ്ങള്‍ക്കിരയായോ മരണപ്പെടുകയാണു പതിവെന്നും ഗവേഷകര്‍ പറയുന്നു. പാമ്പുകളെ ഈ ഫംഗസ് ബാധിക്കുന്നുവെന്നതല്ലാതെ ഇതിനുള്ള കാരണമോ പരിഹാരമോ കണ്ടെത്താന്‍ ഇതുവരെ ഗവേഷകര്‍ക്കു സാധിച്ചിട്ടില്ല. അതുകൊണ്ടു തന്നെ പാമ്പുകള്‍ക്ക് ഇത് അതീവ അപകടകരമായ അവസ്ഥയാണെന്നാണു ഗവേഷകര്‍ വിലയിരുത്തുന്നത്.
