নবম বারের মতো আওয়ামী লীগের সভাপতি নির্বাচিত হয়েছেন শেখ হাসিনা। আর দ্বিতীয় বারের মতো সাধারণ সম্পাদক নির্বাচিত হলেন ওবায়দুল কাদের। দলের ২১ তম জাতীয় সম্মেলনের কাউন্সিল অধিবেশনে সাড়ে সাত হাজার কাউন্সিলর তাদের নির্বাচিত করেন। আগামী তিন বছরের জন্য তারা দায়িত্ব পেলেন। সভাপতি ও সাধারণ সম্পাদকের নাম ঘোষণার পর দলের কাউন্সিলরা সমস্বরে তাতে সমর্থন জানান।
আওয়ামী লীগের সভাপতি ও প্রধানমন্ত্রী শেখ হাসিনা বলেছেন, ‘আমি আওয়ামী লীগে আছি, এখানেই থাকবো। এটাই আমার পরিবার। ‘৭৫ সালে আমি মা-বাবা, ভাইবোন হারিয়ে বিশাল এক পরিবার পেয়েছি। সেটা হলো বাংলাদেশ আওয়ামী লীগ পরিবার।’ নবমবারের মতো আওয়ামী লীগের সভাপতি নির্বাচিত হওয়ার পর দলের নেতাকর্মীদের উদ্দেশে দেওয়া ভাষণে তিনি একথা বলেন। শনিবার (২১ ডিসেম্বর) দলের ২১তম জাতীয় সম্মেলনের কাউন্সিলের দ্বিতীয় ও শেষ অধিবেশনে দলের সভাপতি, সাধারণ সম্পাদকসহ দলের উপদেষ্টা পরিষদের সদস্যদের নাম ঘোষণা করা হয়েছে।
শক্তিশালী গণতন্ত্র প্রতিষ্ঠার জন্য আওয়ামী লীগ কাজ করবে বলে জানিয়েছেন দলটির সাধারণ সম্পাদক এবং সড়ক পরিবহন ও সেতুমন্ত্রী ওবায়দুল কাদের। তিনি বলেন, ‘আমরা প্রতিপক্ষকে দুর্বল ভাবি না। গণতন্ত্রকে শক্তিশালী করতে চাই। এজন্য বিরোধী দলের পতি আমরা সহানুভূতিশীল। তারা কোনও সভা-সমিতি করতে চাইলে আমরা তাদের সে সুযোগ দিতে চাই।’
