Ben Stokes, the England all-rounder, has sounded skeptical over the nature of the pitches in the 2021 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). The first leg of the T20 tournament is currently taking place at two venues- The MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai and the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. The pitches at both the grounds have been a tad contrasting.
The track in Mumbai has produced some high-scoring matches with targets in excess of 200 not being deemed safe for oppositions. On the contrary, targets of 150 have been tough to chase down at the Chepauk. In Chennai, as the ball gets old, batting becomes an arduous task.

Royal Challengers Bangalore pacer Josh Hazlewood has admitted he got away with the wide delivery which was adjudged legitimate by the on-field umpire during the IPL 2022 clash against Lucknow Super Giants on Tuesday (April 19). It was certainly a turning point of the game as that controversial call led to Marcus Stoinis’ wicket. The Aussie dasher was batting well and threatening to take the game away from RCB.
However, he got out a delivery after the controversial wide call and his frustration was evident. Meanwhile, this incident occurred in the penultimate over of the game. Seeing Stoinis shuffling across the crease, Hazlewood bowled a delivery outside the tramline. Surprisingly, however, the umpire didn’t raise his arms as that was adjudged a legitimate delivery.
Furthermore, Hazlewood dismissed his fellow countryman on the very next delivery as Stoinis walked off the field in frustration. It was smooth sailing for RCB after that as LSG were restricted to 163/8 while chasing 182 at the Dr DY Patil Sports Academy in Mumbai. Speaking of the incident after the game, Hazlewood admitted being lucky with the decision coming in his favour.
“I tried to turn around and get back to my mark as quick as I could. I got pretty lucky on that one so I might have to get him a beer after that,” Hazlewood said at the post-match presentation ceremony. Meanwhile, Hazlewood also dismissed three other batters besides Stoinis and finished with figures of 4/25.
Besides him, skipper Faf du Plessis was the chief architect of RCB’s triumph as he scored a 64-ball 96. The former South African skipper is also hopeful of getting an IPL hundred in future. “Due to the nature of this ground, you do run a lot of twos and towards the end, it can be tiring. I got a few 96, and a 97, so hopefully (a ton) is around the corner,” said the 37-year-old after the game.

The string of exits and pull-outs from the 14th edition of the Indian Premier League continues as now even umpires have joined the list alongside players. Notably, as many as five players including Ravichandran Ashwin (Delhi Capitals), Andrew Tye, Liam Livingstone (Rajasthan Royals), Adam Zampa, Kane Richardson (Royal Challengers Bangalore) have pulled out of the league due to different reasons related to COVID-19.
The latest to join is Nitin Menon and Australian Paul Reiffel, both part of ICC’s Elite Panel of Umpires, who have withdrawn from the IPL due to personal reasons.
“Nitin has a small child to look after as his mother and wife have tested positive while Reiffel informed BCCI that he fears not being able to go home due to the Australian government’s decision banning all flights from India. The BCCI already had several local umpires as back-up so they will be officiating in games in which Menon and Reiffel were scheduled to stand,” a BCCI official confirmed to The Indian Express.
BCCI’s interim chief executive officer Hemang Amin, on Tuesday, wrote to all eight IPL teams, players, officials, commentators as well as coaching and support staff that the board will arrange smooth transport back home once the tournament gets over. The BCCI advisory came after the Australian government decided to halt all flights from India till May 15.
“We understand that many of you are apprehensive about how you will get back home once the tournament concludes, which is natural and understandable. We want to apprise you that you have nothing to worry about.”
