The shaping of India's foreign policy began even before independence. Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India, conceptualized the doctrine of Panchsheel: the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence to govern relations between states. Their first formal codification into a treaty was in an agreement between China and India in 1954. The film travels back to a time when India was still under British rule. Nehru's search for a Foreign Policy converged with the goal of self reliance. He believed that the development of the country could be assured only if there was peace. At no other time during the contemporary history of Modern India, was one man's vision so inextricably linked with the shaping of the country's foreign policy.
