The Deputy Prime Minister spoke at an event to mark Holocaust Memorial Day at King's Cross Station in Central London, held by the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust.
'We are indeed all here to remember because if we forget of course we endanger the future by risking a repeat of the past. It's well known that guards in the Nazi concentration camps would torment their victims by saying 'no one will believe you. No one will remember. And if you say it no one will believe you or care what you have to say.'
So forgetting would be a betrayal of what those people endured in those horrific circumstances. It would be a betrayal of the values of reconciliation which is embodied in this memorial day, and it would also deprive the generations of today and of the future of the knowledge of history which is such an important inoculation for tragedies in the future.
I know a little bit myself from my own experience and from my own families of the value of remembrance. My mother spent many years with her sisters in a Japanese prisoner of war camp in Indonesia. My brothers and my sister and I were aware of this as we grew up, but my mum sheltered us as small children of the horrific details, and it was only when we were older that she told us about everything she'd been through. It made a lasting impression on me, of everything she'd been through, an enormous impression on my outlook on things.
So rem.

Watch Clegg Tells LBC 97 3 We Made 'Serious Mistakes' over Rennard Video.
The turmoil within Liberal Democrat ranks over Lord Rennard deepened last night after Nick Clegg admitted that allegations of sexual harassment were a factor in the peer's decision to quit as the party's chief executive.
To the dismay of MPs, the Deputy Prime Minister dramatically altered his explanation for Lord Rennard's surprise resignation in 2009, which had previously been blamed on ill health. His comments were rejected by the peer's friends, who said he had been warned by his doctors that he could be dead within a year unless he led a less stressful lifestyle.
And last night the party's most senior female politician, Baroness Williams of Crosby, spoke out in support of Lord Rennard, claiming the charges against him had been 'hopelessly exaggerated'.
The furore sparked by claims that Lord Rennard propositioned as many as 10 young Liberal Democrat activists has convulsed the party, raised fresh questions about Mr Clegg's leadership and hit its campaign for today's pivotal by-election in Eastleigh.
The peer has strenuously denied the claims and said he had never received a complaint about his conduct during his entire time with the party.
Quizzed yesterday about Lord Rennard's departure, Mr Clegg said: 'He left on health grounds but the issues of

Nick Clegg shifted ground on the Lord Rennard scandal yet again today, this time hinting that the hidden sex scandal was a factor in the peer’s early retirement in 2009.
The Deputy Prime Minister said allegations of improper conduct to women had been “in the background” when it was decided Lord Rennard would step down because of ill health. That contrasted with the official version that he left office for health reasons alone.
In another dramatic change from his indignant reaction to earlier criticism this week, the Lib-Dem leader admitted his party made “very serious mistakes” in the way it handled the informal complaints made by several women.
In a third change of tone, he also praised the journalists who exposed the Rennard scandal, in contrast with his remarks yesterday about “self-appointed detectives” in the media.
“There were some very serious mistakes and the women were not listened to and were let down,” Mr Clegg confessed during his weekly phone-in on LBC 97.3 radio. “I so much believe it is crucial you treat people with respect and dignity in everything you do — and that is what I expect of people in the organisation I lead. That, clearly, did not happen here, to put it mildly.”
His apologetic tone was more in line with party president Tim Farron who admitted on Monday that the Lib-Dems had “screwed up”.
Mr Clegg insists he did not know of any specific allegations — strongly
