Bruised and battered from the poor start to their IPL 2018 campaign, and compounded by the resignation of skipper Gautam Gambhir, a beleaguered Delhi Daredevils under young Shreyas Iyer face a daunting task to lift their fortunes as they take on Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) here on Friday.
Currently languishing at the bottom of the Indian Premier League points table, the Daredevils will hope for a new lease of life under the new skipper even as KKR will attempt to take full advantage of the situation and press for their fourth win in seven games at the Ferozshah Kotla here.
After losing five of their six outings, Delhi have a tough task of winning seven of the remaining eight matches to be in contention for the play-offs and the onus is on 23-year-old Iyer and the team management to formulate the correct combination for a turnaround.
With Gambhir battling poor form and the rest of the batting order not clicking in unison, Delhi have so far been over-reliant on young Rishabh Pant.
Iyer almost single-handedly propelled Delhi to their second win in the IPL, in their previous match against Kings XI Punjab, only to fall short by four runs.
The Daredevils have not been particularly lucky on the fitness front either with Jason Roy (side strain) and Chris Morris (back problem) recovering. The only game Daredevils have won so far was shaped by Roy's unbeaten whirlwind knock of 91 on debut against Mumbai Indians..

In the tournament so far, neither batsmen of Delhi have been able to walk nor there is a sharp edge in bowling. So far, he has got the sole win against Mumbai Indians and in the remaining five matches he has to face defeat.

The Kolkata Knight Riders made up for the loss of their key players to a lot of extent as they welcomed old and new players to their squad at the IPL 2022 mega auction. While KKR bought back the likes of Australian Test skipper Pat Cummins for INR 7.25 crore, middle-order batter Nitish Rana (INR 8 crore) and young pacer Shivam Mavi (INR 7.25 crore) respectively, they also made some smart buys by outbidding the rest of the competitors to lay a solid foundation as the franchise looks to take its legacy forward.
The two-time winners had retained the Caribbean all-rounder Andre Russell for INR 12 crore, all-rounder as well as explosive opener Venkatesh Iyer for INR eight crores, and mystery spinners Sunil Narine and Varun Chakravarthy for six and eight crores respectively on November 30, 2021, and had a purse of INR 48 crore heading into the IPL 2022 mega auction. They were impressive on the first day itself by ensuring that they had their bases covered.
The former champions roped in India’s limited-overs middle-order batter Shreyas Iyer for a sum of INR 12.25 crore and he still remains their most expensive buy so far this season. The franchise showed immense faith in senior India Test specialist Ajinkya Rahane by bringing him on board for INR 1 crore. They also invested in England’s white-ball specialist Sam Billings by paying him INR 2 crore. Nonetheless, what really stood out here is that the Kolkata-based franchise showed a lot of courage to buy domestic and uncapped talents, something that has been their tradition for the past few years.

427 runs and 15 wickets in 39.4 overs and a winning margin of 7 runs. Yes, these were the stats of Match 30 of the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) season on Monday (April 18). Rajasthan Royals (RR) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) played out a thriller at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai. The Royals, in the end, prevailed or perhaps made a stunning comeback, courtesy of Yuzvendra Chahal’s sensational hat-trick in the 17th over, to win the game by seven runs.
Clearly, after batting so well in the steep chase of 218 runs, KKR had botched it up grandly, shooting themselves in the foot, especially in the 17th over of the innings. Skipper Shreyas Iyer’s valiant 85 off just 51 deliveries went in vain too and expectedly, he wasn’t happy after the loss.
He was seen complaining about something to the head coach Brendon McCullum who was sitting in the dugout. Shreyas Iyer had his bat and helmet in the hands and was talking to McCullum about some action on the field. Understandably, the KKR coach too didn’t have anything to say at that point given that emotions do take over after losing such a close game.
As far as the match is concerned, the Royals were propelled by a brilliant ton from Jos Buttler, his second of the season. He scored 103 runs off 61 deliveries with nine fours and five sixes to his name. Sanju Samson’s 38 off 19 and Shimron Hetmyer’s 26* off 13 also helped RR as they posted a huge total of 217 runs for the loss of five wickets in their 20 overs.
In response, Aaron Finch slammed a brilliant half-century while Shreyas Iyer also led the chase for his side. They were well in control of the chase needing 40 runs off last four overs with six wickets in hand. But Yuzvendra Chahal had other ideas who picked up a brilliant hat-trick to leave the opposition stunned, and despite Umesh Yadav smacking a few blows out of the ground, KKR fell short in the chase by seven runs.

They made as many as five changes for the MI clash and skipper Shreyas Iyer admitted it’s not easy to inform players that they are being dropped. He also revealed that, at times, the CEO of the franchise, Venky Mysore, is also involved in the team selection. “It is really difficult (to tell players they won’t play). Coach and at times, CEO is also obviously involved in team selections,” Shreyas Iyer told Star Sports.
“Each and every player takes it well, and they have put in their best efforts. The win was comprehensive, and when I spoke to the players, they were pumped up to win the game today,” he added. Meanwhile, Shreyas was pleased with the overall outcome of the game as his side crossed the line pretty comfortably at the end. He also lauded Venkatesh Iyer for his quickfire 43 inside the powerplay.
