india's newly appointed rural development minister, who died in a car crash in Delhi on Tuesday, will be given a state funeral, officials say.

Gopinath Munde will be cremated later at his village in Maharashtra state.

His body was flown on Tuesday night to Mumbai and supporters have been paying their last respects.

Mr Munde was on his way to the airport to take a flight to his home state of Maharashtra when his car was hit by another car, officials said.

Doctors at the AIIMS hospital said he was not breathing when brought in and efforts to resuscitate him failed. The autopsy showed he died from a spinal fracture.

On Wednesday morning, thousand have gathered in Parli village where Mr Munde's body will brought for his last rites in a few hours, BBC Hindi's Devidas Deshpande reports from the village.

Security is tight as several senior politicians are due to attend the cremation and tens of thousands will be in the village by the time of the funeral, our correspondent adds..
