Ryan Lanza traveled to Sandy Hook Elementary School to murder his mother Nancy, age 52.
Lanza and another shooter left 27 total dead, 18 were children.
Lanza turned a gun on himself and his body was found in that kindergarten room.
There were two dead bodies at the home of his mother, but it’s unclear if one was his mother or whether she was at school. The latter appears more likely based on details reported at this point.
His father, Peter Lanza has also been found dead.
The official also said Ryan Lanza’s girlfriend and another friend are missing in New Jersey.
The principal of the school, Dawn Hochsprung and one member of the administration have been identified as part of the deceased.

NEWTOWN, Conn. -- A lone gunman killed 26 people at an elementary school here, including 20 children, in a terrifying Friday morning shooting spree that rocked this genteel community.
The shooter was identified by the Associated Press as Adam Lanza, 20, who was found dead inside Sandy Hook Elementary School of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. At least three weapons were recovered at the scene, including a .223-caliber assault rifle from the back of a car and two semiautomatic handguns found near Lanza. His 24-year-old brother, Ryan, of Hoboken, N.J., was being questioned by authorities.
A law enforcement official -- briefed on the situation but asked not to be named because he was not authorized to speak publicly -- said that Nancy Lanza, the shooter's 52-year-old mother and Sandy Hook kindergarten teacher, was among those killed.
Authorities say an adult victim was found at Nancy Lanza's home, but would not confirm the identity. Details about what transpired at the school and the Newton home remained sketchy several hours after the shootings, which began at about 9:30 a.m., shortly after classes began. State Police Lt. Paul Vance said authorities were still examining the gruesome crime scene and determining victims' identities and piecing together the sequence of events.

A man with a semi-automatic rifle killed at least four people and wounded several others Friday as he carried out a deadly rampage across several blocks of a normally idyllic beachfront city before police shot him dead in the Santa Monica College Library.
Police said earlier that seven people were killed, including the gunman.
The violence began when the gunman, dressed in all black and wearing what appeared to be a ballistic jacket, opened fire on a house where the bodies of the gunman's father and brother were found, authorities said.
As the house burst into flames, the man wounded a woman in a car before moving toward the campus, spraying bullets as he went. Police said he opened fire on a city bus, a police car and other vehicles, as well as bystanders and pedestrians.
He killed three people on the street before shooting at an SUV leaving a campus parking lot. That vehicle's driver was killed and two passengers were wounded as the car crashed through a block wall.
From there, the gunman entered the campus, shooting a woman as he made his way toward the college's library, where students were studying for final exams.
'It appears that those who were encountered on the street were random victims,' Santa Monica Police Chief Jacqueline Seabrooks said.

A gunman dressed in black killed four people in a string of shootings through the California town of Santa Monica on Friday before he was shot dead by police in a community college library, law enforcement officials said. Five other people were wounded, one of them critically.
As the gunman lay dead on a sidewalk outside the Santa Monica College library, a second individual was taken into custody near the campus and described by police as a 'person of interest' in the case. He was later released. The police also said they now believe the alleged gunman acted alone.
Police initially said six people were killed by the gunman, who was described only as a man between the ages of 25 and 30.
Officials said the discrepancy occurred because of conflicting witness accounts. They added that one of the wounded remains in critical condition.
The killing spree marked the latest in string of high-profile mass shootings over the past year, including a December attack in Connecticut that killed 20 children and six adults at an elementary school and a shooting last July at a suburban Denver movie theater that killed 12 people.
Those attacks have helped reignite a national debate over gun violence in America that spurred Obama and his fellow Democrats to push for expanded background checks for gun buyers - an initiative defeated in the U.S. Senate.

Santa Monica Police Chief Jacqueline Seabrooks described a violent shooting rampage that appears to have begun in the 2000 block of Yorkshire Avenue just before noon.
Two people were found dead on Yorkshire Avenue and a home was on fire, authorities said.
The gunman then moved west along Pico Boulevard, firing at cars, including a bus and a police vehicle.
One person died at Cloverfield and Pico boulevards; two died at 19th Street and Pico Boulevard. Another woman died at the hospital.
Seabrooks said the gunman may not have acted alone. A second 'person of interest' is in custody.
'We are not convinced 100% that the suspect who was killed operated in solo or a lone capacity,' Seabrooks said.
The suspect fled onto Santa Monica College, where he was pursued by police. He shot a woman on campus and ran into the library, where he continued to fire rounds from an assault rifle.
Authorities shot and killed the gunman on campus. He has not yet been identified, but police described him as being 25 to 30 years old.
They have detained a second man, who has not been identified. He is considered a person of interest.
