Russia will welcome the sporting world back to Sochi on Friday for the Winter Paralympics opening ceremony. Less than a fortnight after the Winter Olympics ended, 575 athletes from 45 countries will compete for 72 gold medals in five sports over 10 days. That's the largest number of athletes and countries to take part in the event since it was first held in 1976. The Games, opened by Russian president Valmadir Putin, will begin amid an escalating political crisis in Ukraine.
A number of the world's politicians have said they will snub the showpiece event following Russian intervention in Crimea, situated just 300 miles from Sochi.
Prime Minister David Cameron said it would be wrong for British ministers to attend the Games - a decision criticised by International Paralympic Committee president Sir Philip Craven - while ParalympicsGB patron Prince Edward has also decided not to travel.
Ukraine, one of the most successful Paralympic nations, is also contemplating a boycott of the event. The president of the Ukrainian Paralympic Committee made an emotional plea for peace on the eve of the opening ceremony as he explained how concerned his 23 athletes were about the situation back home.
'My sportsmen dream about participating, but not without the Ukrainian people,' said Valeriy Suskevich. 'The national team represents the Ukrainian people, it's not separate.' Ukraine will make a decision on participation before the op.

The tagline of the 2014 Winter Olympic Games - seen throughout Sochi - was 'Hot. Cool. Yours.'
But there has been another slogan on display here.
Located on the side of the new Formula 1 grandstand, currently being built near the Olympic Park, the phrase 'Russia - Great, New, Open' provides a better insight into how President Vladimir Putin wants the world to perceive his country now.
But with the final medals awarded, and the Olympic flame extinguished, has Russia achieved what it set out to do? Were the first Olympic Games to be staged in the country since 1980 a success?
And what are the wider implications for the International Olympic Committee (IOC) as it now turns its attention to future Games?

The doodle is has a striking and colourful vintage design.
To celebrate the start of the Winter Olympics in Sochi, Google has created a multi-coloured, eye-catching doodle.
The doodle features some of the main sporting events that will be taking place, including skiing, snowboarding and curling.
It appears that the retro-themed doodle has been inspired by the design of the Sochi Games' website, where each sport is represented by a different colour and illustration.
The doodle is completed by a quote from the Olympic Charter just below the search bar which embodies the spirit of the Games, the first of which was held in Chamonix, France, in 1924
The Charter reads: 'The practice of sport is a human right. Every individual must have the possibility of practicing sport, without discrimination of any kind and in the Olympic spirit, which requires mutual understanding with a spirit of friendship, solidarity and fair play.'
Despite this positive message, there has been much controversy surrounding Russia's human rights' record since Sochi won the bid to host the Winter Olympics. In particular concerns have been raised about the treatment of the country's gay community.
The Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics officially starts today with an opening ceremony at the Fisht Olympic Stadium. It will be running from the 7 -23 February while the Winter Paraly
