Showcasing the flag and the excerpt served as an online rebuttal to Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Kozak, who warned spectators and athletes against promoting gay rights during the Olympics, saying it was forbidden by the Olympic Charter and Russian law to spread propaganda during a sporting event.
Beneath the Rainbow Flag was the following paragraph attributed to the Olympic Charter:
'The practice of sport is a human right. Every individual must have the possibility of practicing sport, without discrimination of any kind and in the Olympic spirit, which requires mutual understanding with a spirit of friendship, solidarity and fair play.'
Clicking on the Doodle triggered a search for news related to the Olympic Charter, with stories about what was being interpreted as a Google protest of an anti-gay atmosphere caused by officials in the host country of Russia.
Google declined to comment.

The doodle is has a striking and colourful vintage design.
To celebrate the start of the Winter Olympics in Sochi, Google has created a multi-coloured, eye-catching doodle.
The doodle features some of the main sporting events that will be taking place, including skiing, snowboarding and curling.
It appears that the retro-themed doodle has been inspired by the design of the Sochi Games' website, where each sport is represented by a different colour and illustration.
The doodle is completed by a quote from the Olympic Charter just below the search bar which embodies the spirit of the Games, the first of which was held in Chamonix, France, in 1924
The Charter reads: 'The practice of sport is a human right. Every individual must have the possibility of practicing sport, without discrimination of any kind and in the Olympic spirit, which requires mutual understanding with a spirit of friendship, solidarity and fair play.'
Despite this positive message, there has been much controversy surrounding Russia's human rights' record since Sochi won the bid to host the Winter Olympics. In particular concerns have been raised about the treatment of the country's gay community.

On the day the the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics (the 22nd Winter Olympics) in Russia begins, Google has posted a fundamental principle of the Olympic Charter on its home page along with a doodle showcasing six Winter Olympics disciplines presented in the colours of rainbow flag / pride flag, that represents gay pride.
The extract from the Olympic Charter and the doodle is Google's way of protesting against Russian President Vladimir Putin's scarcely veiled campaign against gays and there has also been much discussion on how Russia would deal with gay athletes during the Winter Games.
The same doodle and the extract has also been posted on Google's Russia home page.
The Olympic Charter is the codification of the Fundamental Principles of Olympism, rules and bye-laws adopted by the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
