Frenchman Pierre Vaultier won a dramatic and rain-soaked snowboard cross final in Rosa Khutor.
Vaultier's achievement was all the more impressive given he tore his anterior cruciate ligament [ACL] in December.
It is an injury which usually takes a minimum of six months in heal, but he finished ahead of Nikolay Olyunin of Russia and USA's Alex Deibold.
The event had been delayed by 24-hours due to heavy fog on Monday, which saw the usual seedings round axed.
Athletes were placed in heats according to their world rankings and Russian Olyunin impressed throughout, winning each of his races before losing out to Vaultier in the final.
By finishing on the podium Vaultier, 26, and Diebold, 27, maintained their respective nation's record of winning a snowboard cross medal in each Olympics it has featured in.
The sport debuted at the 2006 Games in Turin.
It was the first time France had finished on top of the podium and Vaultier's team-mate Paul-Henri De Le Rue - who won bronze in Vancouver four years ago - was fourth.
'First Frenchman or not, it's incredible,' said Vaultier. 'I had a knee three times the (normal) size and did my cruciate ligament.'
'Fifteen days ago I was doing everything to be here for this - what's happening to me is just incredible!'
Three-time Olympian Nate Holland of USA and Australian Alex 'chumpy' Pullin, who were both con.

Canada's Marielle Thompson held off team-mate Kelsey Serwa to win gold in the women's ski cross at a damp and drizzly Rosa Khutor.
On her Olympic debut Thompson, 21, kept out Serwa with Sweden's Anna Holmlund claiming bronze.
French veteran Ophelie David, 37, fell midway through the four-woman final to miss out on a medal.
World champion Fanny Smith of Switzerland only made it as far as the small final, placing eighth.
Thompson backed up the form that has yielded two World Cup wins this season with a strong performance over the challenging Sochi course.
The world championship runner-up hit the front early and she and Serwa, who was fifth in Vancouver and won the Olympic test event here, stretched clear of the other two.
David went down at the back of the field leaving the first three to coast home.
Germany's Anna Woerner and Canada's Stephanie Joffroy were both taken off the mountain in stretchers with leg injuries sustained in separate crashes in earlier rounds.

Slovenia's Tina Maze won her second Sochi Olympic title with victory in the women's giant slalom.
Maze, 30, who shared downhill gold with Dominique Gisin earlier in the programme, led by 0.52 seconds after the first run.
She was as solid in the second run, winning by 0.07 seconds in 2:36.87.
Super-G champion Anna Fenninger of Austria claimed her second medal with silver while German defending champion Viktoria Rebensburg won bronze.
Celebrated violinist Vanessa-Mae, competing for Thailand as Vanessa Vanakorn, was the 67th and last finisher on her Olympic debut with a time of 3:26.97 - 50 seconds behind Maze.
The Slovenian, who won silver in giant slalom and super-G in Vancouver four years ago, led Sweden's Jessica Lindell-Vikarby after run one and held on despite only posting the 11th fastest time in the second descent.
She celebrated by belly-flopping onto the wet snow and pretending to swim the breaststroke.
'I have dreamed about a day like this, even though it is raining,' she said. 'I feel proud, I think I will realise what I have done many years later.'
Maze is the oldest Olympic women's giant slalom champion and the second female to do the downhill-giant slalom double at a Games after Switzerland's Marie-Therese Nadig in Sapporo in 1972.
American Julia Mancuso, who won bronze in the combined event, crashed out on the first run, while Germany's double Sochi me

The tagline of the 2014 Winter Olympic Games - seen throughout Sochi - was 'Hot. Cool. Yours.'
But there has been another slogan on display here.
Located on the side of the new Formula 1 grandstand, currently being built near the Olympic Park, the phrase 'Russia - Great, New, Open' provides a better insight into how President Vladimir Putin wants the world to perceive his country now.
But with the final medals awarded, and the Olympic flame extinguished, has Russia achieved what it set out to do? Were the first Olympic Games to be staged in the country since 1980 a success?
And what are the wider implications for the International Olympic Committee (IOC) as it now turns its attention to future Games?
