Veena Malik has expressed her anger and disbelief after she was handed a 26-year jail term by a Pakistani anti-terrorism court for 'malicious acts' of blasphemy.
Her crime? Appearing in a pretend wedding scene, staged on a daytime show broadcast by Geo TV and based on the marriage of the Prophet Mohamed's daughter.
The programme sparked a wave of controversy in the Islamic country when it aired in May, despite the fact similar scenes had been aired in the past to little or no such public outrage. Some even apparently suspected that Pakistan's military were behind the mock wedding, and that it was put on in a bid to wage a blasphemy war against the broadcaster.
Malik's husband, Asad Bashir Khan, and Mir Shakil-ur-Rahman, the chief executive of the biggest media group in the Asian country, were further sentenced to 26 years behind bars for the apparent religious offence. The host of the show Shaista Wahidi was also punished.
'26 years! Come on. 26 years is a lifetime... But I have faith in higher courts in Pakistan,' Malik said in a recent interview quoted by Gulf News.
'When the final verdict comes, it will do justice to me. Nothing bad is going to happen.'
The court order will be enforced in the Pakistan-controlled city of Gilgit, which is also part of the India-claimed Kashmir regions.

Actress Veena Malik and her husband, Asad Bashir, along with one of the biggest Pakistani media group, have been sentenced to 26 years of imprisonment by an anti-terrorism court of Pakistan, on account of airing a blasphemous programme on television. Veena, presently in Dubai, is “shocked†to say the least. She said, “It is a shocking news for me. We did not have any control over any television content that was aired. We were just a part of the show, where our mock marriage was organised. Later, footage was made out of it and circulated. And some 100 FIRs have been registered against us now.†Veena, along with her husband will visit Pakistan in the first week of December to attend the hearings. Meanwhile, their lawyers are handling the case. “I have been recovering from C-section and the doctors have asked me to rest for three months. So, we will be visiting Pakistan in December, once I am fit.†However, the Pakistani actress will take it one day at a time now. “We are born Muslims and all I can say is that we have not done any mistakes. We are innocent and that is why I am going to Pakistan to face it. It is not a blasphemy in any way. There is no truth to it. And the moment you attach Veena Malik’s name to anything, it becomes international. Thus, these people have tried to create a controversy out of the whole thing,†she said.
