For those of you not familiar with Saint Patrick's Day, it's a cultural and religious holiday celebrated on the 17th of March in Dublin, Ireland. The tradition came about at the instigation of the Irish Protestant organization The Knights of St. Patrick. The inaugural parade took place on March 17, 1783. In what has been described as an act of cultural re-orientation the British established a new focus of ritual and spectacle in the figure of St. Patrick, a pre-reformation saint who appealed to both the Roman Catholic and Irish Protestant traditions in Ireland. Guarding the inaugural procession were the mainly Protestant Volunteers who were charged with keeping order on the streets and at the service in the Protestant St. Patrick's Cathedral. The subsequent celebrations took place in two venues: on March 17 in the ballroom (which the Lord Lieutenant Earl Temple II had renamed after St Patrick) of Dublin Castle, the ancient seat of Bri.

The gay ban of New York's St Patrick's Day parade is un-Irish

As a gay guy from Dublin, I know how modern Ireland celebrates St Patrick's Day. So I'll pass on New York's outmoded bigotry.

The St Patrick's day parade in Dublin, Ireland is a gay-friendly event, unlike its New York city counterpart. Photograph: Julien Behal/PA
As an Irish person, it's an event I say I like a little less every year. But with a sort of playful resignation: it's the St Patrick's Day parade again, is it?

I suppose I'd better complain about leprechaun hats and jarring racial stereotypes, but eventually, wear some sort of green thing and drink too much beer, in spite of myself. Admittedly, the celebration in Dublin can be a lot of fun, even if it is an unabashed kitsch-fest. This year, I actually had even higher hopes, because I recently moved to New York - home of the world's largest St Patrick's parade. Surely, it would be better here, I thought: the Fifth Avenue march could only be exciting.

I was wrong. It's not the green outfits, it really isn't, and it's not the promotional websites that look like they were somehow designed in 1950. No, as a gay person, my negative attitude stems from something completely different: its organizers ban me, and other gay people, from openly participating. In one of the most diverse ci

Apney Dil Ki Jo Suni, Ik Raah Yun Chuni
Aur Phir Nikal Pare, Ho Kay Mast Chal Pare
    Mushkilein Tou Ayeingi, Museebatein Darayengi
Zid Pe Tum Are Raho, Jazbay se Jure Raho
Jab Tum Yeh Mano Gey, Juro Gey To Jano Gey
Jab Tum Yeh Mano Gey, Juro Gey To Jano Gey

Hasay Koi Hasa Kare, Mana Kare Kia Kare
Rukawaton Ko Tor Key, Khuwab Peechay Chor Ke
Jo Aag Se Guzer Sako, Tu Kia Hai Jo Na Kar Sako
Jazbay Se Jo Than Lo, Jurey Raho Aur Jaan Lo
Jab Tum Yeh Mano Gey, Juro Gey To Jano Gey

49ers Chris Culliver Apologizes For Anti Gay Remarks' Gay Players Not Welcome On NFL Team'

San Francisco 49er Chris Culliver selfishly shot off his mouth yesterday, igniting a firestorm of controversy and creating a nightmare for his team and the National Football League as they head to the Super Bowl. For that alone the NFL should suspend him, his comments having put his entire team at the center of an unnecessary controversy as they're trying to focus on the game.

But for the horrendously bigoted, anti-gay content of his remarks, there is no question that Culliver must be suspended if the NFL is serious about its claims to be taking on homophobia in its ranks. Thanks to players like Minnesota Vikings punter Chris Kluwe and Baltimore Ravens linebacker Brendan Ayanbadejo and their pro-gay advocacy, we're seeing a shift among NFL players, but the leadership needs to take strong stand against Culliver's kind of bigotry if that shift is to continue.

'I don't do the gay guys, man,' Culliver told radio host Artie Lange. 'I don't do that. No.'

Asked whether there are any gay players on the 49ers, Culliver said, 'Nah. We don't got no gay people on the team. You know, they gotta get up out of here if they do. Can't be with that sweet stuff.'

Incredulous, Lange pointed out that gay players might be able to play well, too, but Culliver responded, 'Nah. Nah. Can't be... can't... uh... be in the locker room.'

    Lange then

49ers gay ad: Anti-gay bullying video pulled

A 49ers gay ad has been pulled after two team members deny participating in it. On Feb. 1, Yahoo! Sports reported that the 'It Gets Better' video that was made as part of an anti-bullying campaign is no longer online.

'Movement co-founder Dan Savage made the decision to pull the video after linebacker Ahmad Brooks and tackle Isaac Sopoaga strangely denied their involvement with 'It Gets Better' when asked about it by Kevin Manahan of USA Today on Thursday afternoon. After being shown the video, the players then claimed ignorance of the ad's intentions and refused comment,' Yahoo! Sports reported.

The 49ers gay ad marked the first time that an NFL team filmed such a spot. It is unknown why 'It Gets Better' decided to pull the video, which seemed like it would do more good than not, regardless of Brooks and Sopoaga's comments. Many are surprised that the guys were even asked about the ad, given the fact that they have to play football this weekend. That doesn't make what they said right -- or wrong.
Naturally, the timing of this story is suspicious, given the fact that the 49ers will play in Sunday's Super Bowl against the Baltimore Ravens.

The 49ers gay ad was 'designed to encourage hope and acceptance among gay teens who are being bullied.'
