To speak of Nelson Mandela in mortal terms is trying to eclipse the shadow of a person who showed that it was easier to rebuild a nation using love and peace rather than hate and war. Honouring the same spirit of the late South African president, Google on Friday released its latest doodle celebrating the 96th birth anniversary of the charismatic leader. The interactive doodle showcases different stages of Mandela's life, along with quotes from his autobiography, The Long Walk to Freedom.
Nelson Mandela, better known as 'Madiba' and 'Tata' amongst his South African supporters, was born July 18 1918 as Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela to the Thembu royal family. He died last year on December 5 after suffering from pulmonary infection - he was 95 years old then. Mandela, who was also a boxer in his younger days, first became a part of the ANC (African National Congress) and rose to prominence during the ANC's Defiance Campaign in 1952. He started his law practice in 1949, and was majorly involved in helping set free those members of the ANC convicted by the state.
Mandela was unsuccessfully persecuted by the state up until the time he co-founded the armed wing of the ANC - Umkhonto we Sizwe (Spear of the Nation). He was arrested for a sabotage campaign against the apartheid government in 1962 - then convicted, tried and sentenced to life imprisonment. Google and the Nelson Mandela Centre of Memory (NMCM) have announced that the new Nelson Mandela Digital Archive is now live on the web, freely accessible to the global public.
Google gave a $1.25m [8.6 million rand] grant to the Johannesburg-based NMCM in 2011 to help preserve and digitize thousands of archival documents, photographs and videos about Mr Mandela. And now the digital exhibition has become a reality.

JOHANNESBURG - Google, in partnership with the Nelson Mandela Centre of Memory (NMCM), launched a digital archive on Nelson Mandela today.
The annals include over 1,900 unique images, documents and videos and will continue to grow over time, said Mr Luke Mckend, country manager for Google, South Africa.
The digital records house Mr Mandela's correspondence with family, comrades, and friends, as well as diaries written in his 27-year imprisonment on Robben Island and notes he made while leading negotiations that led to the end of Apartheid in South Africa.
The archive will also have the earliest-known photograph of Mr Mandela, rare images of his prison cell and never-seen drafts of Mr Mandela's manuscripts for his autobiography 'Long Walk to Freedom'.
Mr Steve Crossan, director of the Google Cultural Institute said: 'The Mandela Digital Archive Project shows how the Internet can help preserve historical heritage and make it available to the world. We've worked closely with the NMCM to create an interactive online experience with powerful search and browsing tools, so that users can explore Mr Mandela's inspiring life story.'

Saul Bass (May 8, 1920 -- April 25, 1996) was an American graphic designer and filmmaker, best known for his design of motion picture title sequences, film posters, and corporate logos.
During his 40-year career Bass worked for some of Hollywood's most prominent filmmakers, including Alfred Hitchcock, Otto Preminger, Billy Wilder, Stanley Kubrick and Martin Scorsese. Among his most famous title sequences are the animated paper cut-out of a heroin addict's arm for Preminger's The Man with the Golden Arm, the credits racing up and down what eventually becomes a high-angle shot of a skyscraper in Hitchcock's North by Northwest, and the disjointed text that races together and apart in Psycho.
Bass designed some of the most iconic corporate logos in North America, including the AT&T 'bell' logo in 1969, as well as AT&T's 'globe' logo in 1983 after the breakup of the Bell System. He also designed Continental Airlines' 1968 'jetstream' logo and United Airlines' 1974 'tulip' logo which became some of the most recognized airline industry logos of the era. Google honored Saul Bass by featuring him in a Google Doodle on May 8, 2013.
