മലിനീകരണമുണ്ടാക്കുന്ന സ്റ്റെർലൈറ്റ് ഇൻഡസ്ട്രിയൽ പ്ലാന്റ് അടച്ചുപൂട്ടണം എന്നാവശ്യപ്പെട്ട് തൂത്തുക്കുടിയിൽ നടക്കുന്ന സമരം അക്രമാസക്തമായി. സമരക്കാർക്കുനേരെ പൊലീസ് നടത്തിയ വെടിവയ്പിൽ ആറു പേർ മരിച്ചു. നിരവധി പരുക്കേറ്റു. പരുക്കേറ്റവരിൽ ഒരാളുടെ നില ഗുരുതരമാണ്. ജില്ലയിൽ കലക്ടർ നിരോധനാജ്ഞ പ്രഖ്യാപിച്ചു. തൂത്തുക്കുടി പട്ടണത്തിൽ കനത്ത സുരക്ഷ ഒരുക്കി. തൂത്തുക്കുടിയിലെ സ്റ്റെർലൈറ്റ് കോപ്പർ പ്ലാന്റുകൾക്കെതിരെ പ്രദേശവാസികൾ നടത്തുന്ന സമരമാണ് അക്രമാസക്തമായത്.
ഫെബ്രുവരി അവസാനം ആരംഭിച്ച സമരത്തിനു വ്യാപാരി, പരിസ്ഥിതി സംഘടനകളും കോളജ് വിദ്യാർഥികളും സന്നദ്ധ പ്രവർത്തകരും പിന്തുണ പ്രഖ്യാപിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്.ബിഹാർ സ്വദേശി അനിൽ അഗർവാളിന്റെ ഉടമസ്ഥതയിൽ ലണ്ടൻ ആസ്ഥാനമായി പ്രവർത്തിക്കുന്ന വേദാന്ത റിസോഴ്സസ് എന്ന ലോഹ ഖനന കമ്പനിയുടെ കീഴിൽ പ്രവർത്തിക്കുന്ന സ്ഥാപനമാണു സ്റ്റെർലൈറ്റ് കോപ്പർ ഇൻഡസ്ട്രീസ് (ഇന്ത്യ). കമ്പനിയുടെ കീഴിൽ തൂത്തുക്കുടിയിൽ പ്രവർത്തിക്കുന്ന വിവിധ പ്ലാന്റുകളിൽനിന്ന് ഉയരുന്ന വിഷപ്പുകയും രാസമാലിന്യങ്ങളും ശ്വാസകോശ രോഗത്തിനും കാൻസർ ഉൾപ്പെടെയുള്ള മാരക രോഗങ്ങൾക്കും കാരണമാകുന്നതായി പ്രദേശവാസികൾ കാലങ്ങളായി പരാതിപ്പെട്ടിരുന്നു. പ്ലാന്റുകൾ വികസിപ്പിക്കാൻ കമ്പനി തീരുമാനിച്ച സാഹചര്യത്തിലാണ് നാട്ടുകാർ പ്രക്ഷോഭത്തിലേക്ക് നീങ്ങിയത്. പരിസ്ഥിതി സംരക്ഷണ, മലിനീകരണ നിയന്ത്രണ മാനദണ്ഡങ്ങൾ പാലിക്കാതെയാണു പ്ലാന്റുകൾ പ്രവർത്തിക്കുന്നതെന്നും സമരക്കാർ ആരോപിക്കുന്നു.
