Indonesia issues tsunami warning after a 8.7 magnitude earthquake hit waters off westernmost Aceh province.
An earthquake with an initial magnitude of 8.9 has struck under the sea off Indonesia's northern Aceh province.
The quake triggered a tsunami warning across the Indian Ocean region.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said it was not yet known whether a tsunami had been generated, but advised authorities to 'take appropriate action'.
The region is regularly hit by earthquakes. The Indian Ocean tsunami of 2004 killed 170,000 people in Aceh.
The US Geological Survey, which documents quakes worldwide, said the Aceh quake was centred 33km (20 miles) under the sea about 495km from Banda Aceh, the provincial capital.
It was initially reported as 8.9 magnitude but was later revised down to 8.7 by the USGS.
The tsunami centre's warning said quakes of such a magnitude 'have the potential to generate a widespread destructive tsunami that can affect coastlines across the entire Indian Ocean basin'.
The tremor was felt as far away as Singapore, Thailand and India.
Reuters reports that people in the region were making their way to higher ground.

Earthquake hits off Indonesia coast at 8.7 Magnitude Earthquake On April 11, 2012
Jakarta, Indonesia -- A massive earthquake struck off the coast of the Indonesian island of Sumatra on Wednesday afternoon, triggering a tsunami alert for the Indian Ocean.
The quake struck about 434 kilometers (270 miles) southwest of Banda Aceh, the capital of Indonesia's Aceh province, and had a magnitude of 8.6, the U.S. Geological Survey said. It took place at a depth of 23 kilometers (14 miles).
The tremor revived fearful memories of the catastrophic earthquake and tsunami in the region in 2004 that killed tens of thousands of people.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said Wednesday that it had issued a tsunami watch for the entire Indian Ocean, and the Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency said it had put up a tsunami warning.
The Indonesian president, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, said on local television that there were no reports of casualties or damage in Aceh so far.
The areas most at risk of a tsunami are coastal areas of Aceh, particularly the island of Simeulue, Prih Harjadi, an official for the Indonesian geophysics agency said on Metro TV.
The earthquake appears to have involved a horizontal movement rather than a vertical movement, so it is less likely that it will generate a tsunami, said Gary Gibson from the Seismology Research Center in Melbourne, A

A strong earthquake centred off the coast of northeastern Japan has shaken buildings as far as Tokyo, public broadcaster NHK says.
The quake led to a tsunami warning for coastal areas of the northeast.
The BBC has reported there have been no reports of casualties or significant damage.
The earthquake had a preliminary magnitude of 7.3, the US Geological Survey said. That was revised from an earlier estimate of 7.4.
A warning for a one-metre tsunami was issued for the coast of Miyagi Prefecture in northeastern Japan, which was hit by a devastating earthquake and tsunami on March 11, 2011.
That quake triggered fuel-rod meltdowns at the Fukushima nuclear plant, causing radiation leakage, contamination of food and water and mass evacuations in the world's worst nuclear crisis since Chernobyl in 1986.
The government declared in December that the disaster was under control, but much of the area is still free of popul

A powerful earthquake rocked Japan today, sparking a tsunami warning in the same region that was devastated by huge waves last year.
The quake, in the north eastern Miyagi region, was 7.3 in magnitude and tremors were felt nearly 200 miles away in Tokyo, where buildings shook violently for several minutes, the Japanese Meteorological Agency said.
Power supplies were hit, trains were halted and an airport runway shut.
A 3ft tsunami struck the town of Ishinomaki, but there were no casualties.
Resident Chikako Iwai said: “I was in the centre of the city.
'I immediately jumped into the car and started escaping towards the mountains. I’m still hiding inside the car.'
When a tsunami hit the region in March 2011, nearly 19,000 people were killed or listed missing.
It was 9.0 in magnitude and it battered the Fukushima plant in the world’s worst nuclear crisis since Chernobyl.
As the latest quake struck, the NHK TV network urged: “Remember last year. Call on your neighbours and flee to higher ground now. Do not go back.”
A tsunami warning from Honshu to Tokyo was cancelled, with only two people hurt.
There were three aftershocks of 6.2, 5.5 and 4.7 magnitude.
English teacher John Heritage told the BBC: 'We're at an evacuation centre waiting to hear what to do next.'
