Watch the ACN's exclusive interview with Subash Chakma who migrated to Arunachal Pradesh from East Pakistan (now Bangladesh) when he was in his mid twenties in 1964. After the construction of Kaptai Dam in the Karnapuli River, the area was submerged; as a result, many Chakmas and other tribes were compelled to leave their homes. Eventually, this led them to migrate in Arunachal Pradesh (then North Eastern Frontier Agency NEFA). They had to travel continuously on foot from dawn to dusk until they could reach the next refugee camps which were built by Indian Government. Although, the Indian Government provided them with the medical facilities, food other necessities, hundreds of migrants died on the way before they reached their destinations. And many others famished to death due to lack of food supplements and medications. The things were in complete shambles when they made their half journey because many people died and others became emaciated due to lack of food. Sometimes, they had to travel by trains, which were packe
d with people and many died when they were squashed like sardines.
So, in this interview Subash Chakma who is now 75 year old, expresses his pain of the migrants how they faced the pathetic conditions before they settled in NEFA eventually.
