Acclaimed American crime novelist Elmore Leonard, whose witty, gritty and undeniably cool stories were turned into Hollywood hits such as Out of Sight, Jackie Brown, Get Shorty and TV's Justified, has died at the age of 87.
Leonard 'passed away this morning at 7:15 a.m. at home surrounded by his loving family,' according to an update posted Tuesday on his website.
The writer, based for decades in Bloomfield Township, Mich., northwest of Detroit, died of complications from a stroke suffered in early August, according to his longtime researcher, Gregg Sutter.
Though born in New Orleans, he and his family eventually settled in Detroit in the mid-1930s. After serving in the U.S. Navy in the mid 1940s, he enrolled in the University of Detroit and studied English and philosophy.
Despite a busy career as an advertising writer during the 1950s, Leonard started a career writing fiction on the side. His dedication was evident in his work ethic: he would wake in the early hours to spend time writing Westerns before heading in for a day at the Campbell-Ewald Agency.
He published dozens of short stories (such as 3:10 to Yuma), a handful of novels (including his debut, The Bounty Hunters, and the acclaimed Hombre) and sold movie rights to several projects before feeling comfortable enough to quit advertising to focus on fiction full-time in 1961. Even then he maintained a dedicated schedule of writing

California artist Thomas Kinkade dies at age 54
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - California artist Thomas Kinkade, whose brushwork paintings of idyllic landscapes, cottages and churches were big sellers for dealers across the country, died Friday, a family spokesman said.
Kinkade, 54, died at his home in Los Gatos in the San Francisco Bay Area of what appeared to be natural causes, David Satterfield said.
Kinkade's sentimental paintings, with their scenes of cottages, country gardens and churches in dewy morning light, were beloved by middlebrow America but reviled by the art establishment.
The paintings generally depict tranquil scenes with lush landscaping and streams running nearby. Many contain images from Bible passages.
Kinkade, a self-described devout Christian, claimed to be the nation's most collected living artist. His paintings and spin-off products were said to fetch some $100 million a year in sales, and to be in 10 million homes in the United States.
'I'm a warrior for light,' he told the San Jose Mercury News in 2002, in reference to his technical skills but also the medieval practice of using light to symbolize the divine. 'With whatever talent and resources I have, I'm trying to bring light to penetrate the darkness many people feel.'
Before Kinkade's Media Arts Group went private in the middle of the past decade, the compa

Michael Clarke Duncan was one big, irresistible jumble of contradictions.
His presence was formidable, even intimidating: The former bodyguard had a muscular, 6-foot-4 frame, but it was topped by the brightest of megawatt smiles.
His gravelly baritone was well-suited to everything from animated films to action spectacles, but no matter the role, a warmth and a sweetness was always evident underneath.
The prolific character actor, whose dozens of movies included an Oscar-nominated performance as a death row inmate in 'The Green Mile' and box office hits including 'Armageddon,' ''Planet of the Apes' and 'Kung Fu Panda,' died Monday at age 54. And although he only turned to acting in his 30s, it's clear from the outpouring of prayers and remembrances he received across the Hollywood and sports worlds that his gentle-giant persona made him much-loved during that relatively brief time.
Duncan died at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, where he was being treated for a heart attack, said his fiancée, reality TV personality Rev. Omarosa Manigault, in a statement released by publicist Joy Fehily.
Duncan 'suffered a myocardial infarction on July 13 and never fully recovered,' the statement said. 'Manigault is grateful for all of your prayers and asks for privacy at this time. Celebrations of his life, both private and public, will be announced at a later date.'

Dutch actress Sylvia Kristel's breakthrough role in the erotic 1974 movie 'Emmanuelle' led to several sequels and appearances in more than 50 other films.
Actress Sylvia Kristel, the Dutch star of the hit 1970s erotic movie 'Emmanuelle,' has died of cancer in the Netherlands. She was 60.
Kristel died in her sleep Wednesday night, according to a statement from her agent, Features Creative Management.
Her breakthrough came in 'Emmanuelle,' a 1974 erotic tale directed by Frenchman Just Jaeckin, about the sexual adventures of a man and his beautiful young wife, played by Kristel.
She went on to star in several sequels to 'Emmanuelle,' as well as in Hollywood movies including 'The Concorde: Airport '79,' 'The Fifth Musketeer' (both 1979) and 'Private Lessons' (1981).
Kristel appeared in more than 50 films, many erotically tinted, including a 1981 adaptation — also directed by Jaeckin — of D.H. Lawrence's novel 'Lady Chatterley's Lover.'
She was honored in 2006 with a special jury prize at the Tribeca Film Festival for a short animated film she directed called 'Topor et Moi.'
Kristel told the Dutch newspaper De Volkskrant in 2005 that her former partner, Belgian author Hugo Claus, had persuaded her to star in 'Emmanuelle,' which was set in Thailand.
