Somnath Chatterjee, former Lok Sabha Speaker, dies at 89
लोकसभा के पूर्व स्पीकर सोमनाथ चटर्जी का निधन हो गया है. वह किडनी की बीमारी के चलते कोलकाता के एक अस्पताल में भर्ती थे, जहां उन्हें वेंटिलेटर पर रखा गया था.तबीयत नाजुक होने के बाद बीते 10 अगस्त को उन्हें कोलकाता के अस्पताल में भर्ती कराया गया था. माकपा के पूर्व नेता सोमनाथ चटर्जी 10 बार लोकसभा के सांसद रहे हैं. वह कांग्रेस की अगुवाई वाली यूपीए-1 सरकार में 2004 से 2009 तक लोकसभा के अध्यक्ष रहे थे.यूपीए-1 शासनकाल में उनकी पार्टी सीपीएम की ओर से सरकार से समर्थन वापस लिए जाने के बाद उनसे स्पीकर पद छोड़ने को कहा गया था, लेकिन उन्होंने ऐसा करने से मना कर दिया. जिस कारण उन्हें पार्टी से निष्कासित कर दिया गया. चटर्जी सीपीआईएम के केंद्रीय समिति के सदस्य रहे थे, और उन्हें प्रकाश करात के धुर विरोधी के रूप में जाना जाता है
