A group of Gau Rakshaks attacked five cow traders in Alwar in Rajasthan on Saturday. The victims had gone to the cattle fair to trade cows and buffaloes when they were chased and assaulted by the self-proclaimed cow vigilantes.

Khadeeja Farooqui, an eyewitness, recalls the attack made by Gau Rakshaks in Kalkaji. She adds that the vigilantes came with an intent to murder, but failed due to public intervention.

The case has been filed under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act on a complaint filed by an NGO People For Animals (PFA) that is associated with Union minister Maneka Gandhi. The name of PFA volunteers has also come up in connection with the attack, a charge the organisation has denied.
