Two high school football players from a team that was the pride of the small former steel-producing town of Steubenville, Ohio, were convicted Sunday of raping a 16-year-old girl at a party.
Former school quarterback Trent Mays, 17, and team-mate Ma'lik Richmond, 16, broke down in tears in the juvenile court after being found guilty in a case that bitterly divided the declining Rust Belt city and had led to accusations of a cover-up to protect the community's revered athletes. Both were ordered to serve at least a year behind bars, with Mays given an additional 12 months for distributing an image of a nude minor.
Richmond broke into sobs as he approached the victim's family after the verdict, and was heard to tell them: 'I'm sorry for the trouble I have caused you.'
Mays also burst into tears and mumbled apologies but did not go over to the family.
Supporters of the victim, who had demonstrated outside the court for the four days of testimony, clapped and cheered when the guilty verdict was handed down by judge Thomas Lipps, who sat alone without a jury to decide the case.
'Justice has been done in a very difficult case that I wasn't sure would go the right way,' said local housewife Rebecca Mikesell outside the court

The Steubenville, Ohio, rape case has made national headlines because it represents a perfect storm of inappropriate sexual conduct, high-school football heroes, social media and viral YouTube videos.
The case reached some level of closure on Sunday as Judge Thomas Lipps handed down the juvenile equivalent of a guilty verdict and sentenced the two defendants to what could be years in a juvenile correctional facility as a consequence of their actions on August 11 and 12 of last year.

This verdict is a consequence not only of the defendants' actions that night, but also of decades of change in how society views sexual conduct -- and how the law has evolved in response to this change. In this case, a high school girl went to a party and allegedly drank so much that she began slurring her words and was occasionally unresponsive. Two football stars at the party are accused of taking advantage of her impaired state and engaging in sexual conduct with her.
A few decades ago, this behavior would probably have been considered inappropriate or 'ungentlemanly.' Today, it brings protesters into the streets and creates a nationwide outcry about sexual abuse.

2 months ago Anonymous, a muck-raking organization, shed light on the town of Steubenville, which was covering up the rape of a 16-year-old girl by a bunch of star players on the local high school football team. A few days ago two of the rapists, Trent Mays and Malik Richmond, were convicted, and CNN's coverage--much like the town--was biased... in favor of Trent and Malik.
CNN can't be accused of lying in this coverage, but the problem with this coverage is not that CNN said untrue things: It really is a bummer for these boys to have to live with being convicted rapists, and it really is a bummer that their football careers are over, and that the boys and their families had to go through the stressful ordeal of a trial at all. All of that is true.
But CNN could have also focused on the embarrassment that the victim must have been experiencing in the trial, and her likely sense of vulnerability to future attackers, and what it must feel like to have a town shame her and implicitly take the side of the players by covering up her victimization. All of that coverage would have been true too.
The problem with CNN's coverage is that they focused almost completely on the tragedies felt by the culprits while glossing perfunctorily over the tragedies felt by the victim. In doing so, CNN effectively sent the message that, while a 16-year-old girl was raped at multiple parties, the real tragedy was that the young men who raped
