The traffic congestion continues to be a problem in Karmal Ghat at Canacona which has also led to mishaps and accidental deaths in the past. A safety wall on the downward slope in the Ghat had collapsed during an accident and was left without any repairs. Due to lack of the safety wall a vehicle from Mumbai had plunged into the valley claiming the life of one person. As a symbolic protest, locals and social workers erected a temporary wall which is when Canacona MLA and Goa Assembly Speaker Ramesh Tawadkar took cognizance and floated tender through PWD to build a concrete wall. 'The widening work of the road from Karmal Ghat to Gulem has also begun,' said Shreesthal panchayat's former sarpanch Suhas Velip. Meanwhile, the PWD officials have started the process to build a four-lane road given how sharp the turns in the Ghat are. This will require felling of thousands of trees and as per sources, the Forest Department has given the permission to do so.
