It was June 16, 1976. 20,000 black students started a protest against the Apartheid government's decision to force them to use Afrikaans, the language of the oppressor , as a language of instruction. The police shot them. 200 protesters were killed, many people were wounded.
It reminds me of February 21, 1952. Bengali people in East Pakistan protested against the decision of the West Pakistani rulers to force them to learn Urdu, the language of the oppressor and to make Urdu, not Bengali, the state language. The police shot them. Many protesters were killed and wounded.

Miriam Makeba, born Zenzile Miriam Makeba, is the subject of Monday's Google doodle. Makeba was a singer and actress, probably best known for the song 'Pata Pata'.
Miriam Makeba was born in Johannesburg on 4 March 1932. Miriam spent the fix six months of her life in jail after her mother was sent to prison for six months for selling illegal beer when she was just eighteen days old. Her father died when Miriam was six years old.
Miriam started singing while she was very young, and was part of the choir of her primary school. Her professional career began in the 1950s when she was featured in the South African jazz group the Manhattan Brothers. She left the Manhattan Brothers to record with her all-woman group, The Skylarks, singing a mix of jazz and traditional melodies of South Africa.
In 1956, she released the single 'Pata Pata', which was played on all the radio stations and made her known all over. The song is considered by many to be Makeba's signature hit and the song has since been covered by many artists. Originally written and sung in the Xhosa language, the song's title means 'touch touch' in English.
In the late 50s, Miriam Makeba travelled to Europe and US, and gained some popularity. However, when she tried to return to South Africa in 1960 for her mother's funeral, she discovered that her South African passport had been cancelled. This forced her to kickstart her

Google on Monday honoured legendary South African singer and civil rights activist Miriam Makeba on her 81st birthday with a doodle. The singer, also known as Mama Africa, was born in Johannesburg on March 4, 1932.
In the 1960s, Makeba was the first artist from Africa to popularize African music in the US and around the world. She is best known for the song 'Pata Pata', first recorded in 1957.
The Grammy-award winning singer who actively campaigned against South Africa's racist apartheid government, had her citizenship and her right to return to the country revoked after testifying against apartheid before the United Nations in 1963.
After losing her South African citizenship Makeba was granted honorary citizenship in ten countries. She returned to her native country only after the release of Nelson Mandela in 1990.
She recorded and toured with many popular artists, such as Harry Belafonte, Paul Simon, and her former husband Hugh Masekela. In 1962, she performed at President John F Kennedy's birthday party.
Makeba died on November 9, 2008 after performing in a concert in Italy organized to support writer Roberto Savianothe author of Sodom and Gomorrah.
