Douglas Noel Adams (March 11, 1952 -- May 11, 2001) was an English writer, humorist and dramatist.
He is best known as the author of a comic science fiction series 'The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy', which started life in 1978 as a BBC radio comedy before developing into a 'trilogy' of five books that sold over 15 million copies in his lifetime, a television series, several stage plays, comics, a computer game, and in 2005 a feature film.
The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy was a concept for a science-fiction comedy radio series pitched by Adams and radio producer Simon Brett to BBC Radio 4 in 1977.
Adams also wrote Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency (1987) and The Long Dark Tea-Time of the Soul (1988), and co-wrote The Meaning of Liff (1983), Last Chance to See (1990), and three stories for the television series Doctor Who. A posthumous collection of his work, including an unfinished novel, was published as The Salmon of Doubt in 2002.

Douglas Adams, noted author and humorist, is the inspiration behind Monday's Google doodle. Adams is of course best known for his cult classic book The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.
Douglas Adams was on born on 11 March 1952 in Cambridge England. He showed a flair for writing from an early age and went to graduate in English literature in 1974. After graduation, he moved to London with an aim of becoming a TV and radio writer. It was here that we met Monty Python's Graham Chapman, and the two went on to form a writing partnership, albeit for a brief time.
Adams was credited with writing one of the sketches in a Monty Python episode, becoming one of only two people outside the original Monty Python members to be given a writing credit. Adams and Chapman also attempted non-Python projects, but got nowhere and Adams was forced to series of non-writing-related jobs.
While Adams continued to do some writing, his career took off after he got an opportunity to work with the BBC as a radio producer. It was here that The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy was born as a science-fiction comedy series for the radio. The first series - consisting of six episodes - was broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in March and April 1978, and received an excellent response. A seventh episode was broadcast on 24 December 1978.

The doodle has a device with words 'Don't panic' written on it. Here is why the doodle features 'Don't Panic'. In the series, Don't Panic is a phrase written in large, friendly letters on the cover of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.
The doodle includes a spate of elements touching on Adams' famous novels, which are clickable. When clicked, the doodle also plays sound in the background. However, it can be turned off which a click of a mouse.
The doodle features a cup of tea, which brings to our mind one of Adams' Dirk Gently detective novels, named The Long Dark Teatime of the Soul.
It also has a towel, an item Adams always would mention as an essential thing when travelling in space. Besides, with the view to pay a tribute to Adams, his fans celebrate Towel Day every year on May 25, thereby demonstrating their appreciation for Adams and his books, as referred to in Adams' The Hitchhiker'

The doodle also features a robotic character when clicked on the liftdoor. The robot, named Marvin, is one of the several characters from Adam's novel The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

Those of you who remember the pain and frustration of Konami's 1983 hit NES game Track and Field may want to stay off Google tomorrow (today?), as an interactive Olympic-themed Google doodle lets you 'race' the 110m hurdles.
It's a classic finger-mashing game of athleticism, a challenge the equal of the actual Olympics (if the Olympics required the bare minimum of hand fitness). Google has been running special Olympic doodles throughout the Games, but this is the first interactive one.
The current world record for the men's 110m hurdles is 12.87 seconds, held jointly by Dayron Robles of Cuba and Lie Xiang of China. The best runners in the world can regularly race under 13 seconds, but we haven't managed that here yet in Wired.co.uk Towers. Our best was a paltry 13.9 seconds -- easily beatable, surely.

After launching London 2012 Hurdles game, Google has come up with yet another interactive doodle today to represent London 2012 Basketball which allows users score points while playing the match on their computers.
This is Google’s thirteenth and second interactive doodle of the ongoing London 2012 Olympics. Using the space bar or by holding and releasing the left mouse key, the interactive basketball doodle lets users shoot baskets.
The doodle featuring a basketball player also allows you to shoot as many baskets as you can in 24 seconds. The doodle also shows a countdown timer and the points earned.
Earlier, Google had celebrated London 2012 Olympics events like Pole Vault, Shot Put, Table Tennis, Hockey, Artistic Gymnastics men's Rings, Fencing, Diving, Archery, Synchronised Swimming and Javelin with a different doodle theme for every sport.
The opening ceremony of the London 2012 Olympics on July 27 was celebrated with doodle depicting five athletes playing different Olympics sports.

October 31 is celebrated as Halloween in a number of countries around the world and Google is celebrating the event taking users on a visit to a haunted house on many of its home pages.
The Google Happy Halloween doodle features a haunted mansion (numbered 13) with many spooky inhabitants, who double up as letters of the Google logo. The characters reveal themselves when you click on the doors of the haunted house. To add to the atmosphere there is also an eerie sound playing in the background. The faint hearted though can turn it off with a click of a mouse.
A blue one-eyed octopus stands for 'G' in the Google logo, a pair of red and yellow eyes behind the second door from the left are the two 'Os', the second 'G' is a veiled ghost. A clattering skeleton is the 'L' and a smiley face that turns into a monster represents the 'E'. An apparition also appears between the skeleton and the smiley monster.
There is also a black alley cat, a crowing crow and a spider for extra effect. A number of jack-o'-lanterns rest on the steps of the mansion. It is only when you click on all the interactive elements on the Happy Halloween! Google doodle and the alley cat jumps out of the frame that the page redirects to the search results page for the keyword 'Happy Halloween!'.
