A new research on the state of Linux security brings valuable insight into how Linux operating systems are being targeted as organizations increase their digital footprint in the cloud and the pervasive threats that make up the Linux threat landscape. As of 2017, 90% of public clouds workloads ran on Linux. According to Gartner, “Rising interest in cloud-native architectures is prompting questions about the future need for server virtualization in the data center. The most common driver is Linux-OS-based virtualization, which is the basis for containers. Linux allows organizations to make the most of their cloud-based environments and power their digital transformation strategies. Many of today’s most cutting-edge IoT devices and cloud-based applications and technology run on some flavor of Linux, making it a critical area of modern technology to secure.
The report investigates the top malware families affecting Linux servers during the first half of 2021, with the top types of malwares being:
· 25% Coinminers – The high prevalence of cryptocurrency miners is of little surprise given the clear motive of the seemingly endless amount of computing power the cloud holds, making it the perfect environment.
· 20% Web shells – The recent Microsoft Exchange Attack, which leveraged web shells, showed the importance of patching against this type of malware
· 12% Ransomware – The most prevalent detected was the modern ransomware family, DoppelPaymer, however some other notable ransomware families seen targeting Linux systems as well are RansomExx, DarkRadiation, and the DarkSide.

Hybrid IT is an approach to enterprise computing in which an organization provides and manages some information technology resources in-house but uses cloud-based services for others. The term hybrid IT is often used interchangeably with the term hybrid cloud. Managing cloud operations across environments from a ‘single pane of glass’ is important or extremely important for 78% of the respondents in India for successful digital initiatives. Despite escalating cyber-attacks, a third of global and Indian respondents do not have security as their top priority. According to IBM's new global study on cloud transformation, there has been a drastic shift in business needs as only three percent of respondents reported using a single private or public cloud in 2021, down from 29% in 2019 – establishing hybrid cloud as the dominant IT architecture. The global study, conducted by IBM Institute for Business Value in cooperation with Oxford Economics, surveyed almost 7,200 C-suite executives across 28 industries and 47 countries including 287 executives from India. The findings indicate that the cloud market has entered the hybrid, multicloud era and concerns around vendor lock-in, security, compliance and interoperability remain paramount. The study found:

When you use a cloud-based application, you’re entrusting the security of your data to a 3rd party. You’re still handing over sensitive data on your company, employees, and customers to another party who is hosting your data on a server that’s sight unseen. As opposed to just paying for software once and keeping it forever, cloud-applications run on a subscription model where you pay per user per month or per year. If your budget is tight, say for one month, you could end up losing your service, putting your office at a standstill. Data breaches are costly for any organization, and it’s doubly frustrating when your data has been breached by a trusted cloud-vendor. Because cloud companies host so much sensitive data from a variety of clients, hackers know that breaching their systems can mean a jackpot of data to steal. Going to the cloud resulted, around 78 per cent of Indian organisations surveyed were hit by ransomware in 2021 and some of the entities paid over Rs 76 crore as ransom to get their data back, as per the report of Sophos.
