കടുത്ത രൂപത്തിലുള്ള സ്കിസോഫ്രീനിയ അനുഭവിക്കുന്നവരില്‍ ചില അപൂര്‍വ ജനിതക വ്യതിയാനങ്ങള്‍ ഉയര്‍ന്ന തോതില്‍ ഉണ്ടാകുന്നതായി ഗവേഷകര്‍ കണ്ടെത്തി. മാനസികരോഗത്തിന്‍റെ സാധ്യതകള്‍ നിര്‍ണയിക്കാനും പുതിയ ചികിത്സാ മാര്‍ഗങ്ങള്‍ വികസിപ്പിക്കാനും സഹായിക്കുന്നതാണ് കൊളംബിയ സര്‍വകലാശാലയിലെ ഗവേഷകര്‍ നടത്തിയ കണ്ടെത്തല്‍. ഗവേഷണ ഫലം പിഎന്‍എഎസ് ജേണലില്‍ പ്രസിദ്ധീകരിച്ചു.
തലച്ചോറിന്‍റെ പ്രവര്‍ത്തനങ്ങളെ ബാധിച്ച് മതിഭ്രമവും, മിഥ്യാബോധവും ധാരണാശേഷിക്കുറവും ഉണ്ടാക്കുന്ന രോഗമാണ് സ്കിസോഫ്രീനിയ. ഇത് തലമുറകളിലൂടെ കൈമാറ്റം ചെയ്യപ്പെടാനുള്ള സാധ്യത 60 മുതല്‍ 80 ശതമാനം വരെയാണ്. സാധാരണ ചികിത്സ വഴി നില മെച്ചപ്പെടാത്ത കടുത്ത സ്കിസോഫ്രീനിയ രോഗികളായ 112 പേരിലാണ് ഗവേഷണം നടത്തിയത്. ഇവരിലെ ജനിതക വ്യതിയാനങ്ങള്‍ മാനസികാരോഗ്യ പ്രശ്നങ്ങളില്ലാത്ത 5000 പേരുടേതുമായി താരതമ്യപ്പെടുത്തി.
ചികിത്സ ഫലം ചെയ്യാത്ത കടുത്ത സ്കിസോഫ്രീനിയ രോഗികളില്‍ 48 ശതമാനത്തിനും അപൂര്‍വവും വിനാശകരവുമായ ജനിതക വ്യതിയാനം കുറഞ്ഞത് ഒരെണ്ണമെങ്കിലും ഉണ്ടായിട്ടുള്ളതായി ഗവേഷകര്‍ പറയുന്നു. മാനസികാരോഗ്യ പ്രശ്നങ്ങളില്ലാത്തവരില്‍ ഇത് 25 ശതമാനമായിരുന്നു. കടുത്ത സ്കിസോഫ്രീനിയയുമായി ബന്ധപ്പെട്ട ജനിതക ഘടനയെ കുറിച്ച് പൂര്‍ണ ധാരണയുണ്ടാക്കാന്‍ സഹായിക്കുന്നതായിരുന്നു ഗവേഷണമെന്ന് പഠനത്തിന് നേതൃത്വം നല്‍കിയ കൊളംബിയ സര്‍വകലാശാല സൈക്യാട്രി വിഭാഗം പ്രഫസര്‍ ജെഫ്രി എ. ലൈബര്‍മാന്‍ ചൂണ്ടിക്കാട്ടി.
സ്കിസോഫ്രീനിയ കണ്ടെത്തുന്ന അവസരത്തില്‍ തന്നെ രോഗികളുടെ ജനിതക സീക്വന്‍സിങ് നടത്താന്‍ സാധിച്ചാല്‍ കാര്യക്ഷമമായ ചികിത്സകള്‍ ഇതിന്‍റെ അടിസ്ഥാനത്തില്‍ അവര്‍ക്ക് നല്‍കാന്‍ സാധിക്കുമെന്നും പ്രഫസര്‍ ജെഫ്രി കൂട്ടിച്ചേര്‍ത്തു.
