വിപണിയിൽ പരിചയപ്പെടുത്തിയപ്പോൾ തരംഗമായി മാറിയ ഒന്നാണ് ടാറ്റ നാനോ കാർ. ഒരു ലക്ഷം രൂപയ്ക്ക് കാർ സ്വന്തമാക്കാമെന്ന വാർത്ത ലോകമെങ്ങും ഒരത്ഭുതമായി മാറിയ ഒന്നാണ്. ഒരു കാലഘട്ടത്തിൽ സൂപ്പർ ഹീറോ ആയിരുന്ന ടാറ്റ നാനോ പിന്നീട് വിപണിയിലെ പരാജയം ആയതും നമ്മൾ കണ്ടതാണ്. തുടക്കത്തിൽ ഉപഭോക്താക്കളെ ആകർഷിച്ച നാനോയ്ക്ക് പിന്നീട് അതാവർത്തിക്കാൻ സാധിച്ചില്ല.
കുഞ്ഞൻ കാറായ ടാറ്റ നാനോയ്ക്ക് ഒരു പൂർവ്വികൻ ഉണ്ടായിരുന്ന കാര്യം നമ്മളിൽ എത്ര പേർക്കറിയാം? മീര മിനി, അതായിരുന്നു നാനോയുടെ ഈ ആത്മീയ പൂർവ്വികന്റെ പേര്. കുൽക്കർണി എന്നൊരു മനുഷ്യൻ 12000 രൂപയ്ക്ക് ഈ വിശേഷപ്പെട്ട കാർ വിപണിയിലിറക്കാൻ ശ്രമിച്ചിരുന്നു.
ശങ്കർ റാവു കുൽക്കർണി എന്നായിരുന്നു അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ മുഴുവൻ പേര്.
പഠനം പാതി വഴിയിൽ ഉപേക്ഷിക്കേണ്ടി വന്നെങ്കിലും എഞ്ചിനീയറിങ്ങിലെ തന്റെ കരവിരുത് കൊണ്ട് അദ്ദേഹം ലോകശ്രദ്ധയാകർഷിച്ചു. 1945 ൽ ഇന്ത്യ ബ്രിട്ടീഷ് ഭരണത്തിന് കീഴിലുള്ളപ്പോളാണ് ഇത് നടക്കുന്നത്. ജനങ്ങൾക്ക് സ്വീകാര്യമായ ഒരു കാർ നിർമ്മിക്കുക എന്ന പദ്ധതിയിലായിരുന്നു അദ്ദേഹം.
1949 ഓടെ കാറിന്റെ ആദ്യരൂപം അദ്ദേഹം നിർമ്മിച്ചു. രണ്ട് സീറ്റുകളുള്ളതായിരുന്നു ആദ്യ പതിപ്പ്. രണ്ട് വർഷങ്ങൾക്കിപ്പുറം 1951 ൽ മൂന്ന് സീറ്റുകളോട് കൂടി കാർ പുനർനിർമ്മിച്ചു. ശേഷം 1960 ൽ വീണ്ടും നവീകരിച്ച് രൂപകൽപന ചെയ്തു. നവീകരിച്ച ഒത്തിരി സവിശേഷതകൾ ഈ കാറിനുണ്ടായിരുന്നു.
എയർ കൂളിങ് എഞ്ചിൻ, ലഘുവായ ഭാരം എന്നിവ കാറിന്റെ പ്രത്യേകതകൾ ആയിരുന്നു.
റബർ മുഖരിതമായ ഭാഗങ്ങൾ കാറിന്റെ ചെലവ് ചുരുക്കുന്നതിൽ സഹായകമായിട്ടുണ്ടെന്നാണ് കുൽക്കർണി വാദിച്ചത്. കുൽക്കർണി നിർമ്മിച്ച എല്ലാ വകഭേദങ്ങളും ഇന്ധനക്ഷമത ഉള്ളവയായിരുന്നു. 1951 മോഡൽ ലിറ്ററിന് 21 കിലോമീറ്ററും മണിക്കൂറിൽ 90 കിലോമീറ്റർ വേഗവും നൽകിയിരുന്നു. 1960 മോഡലിന് ശേഷം മീരയുടെ അവസാന വകഭേദം 1970 ൽ കുൽക്കർണി നിർമ്മിച്ചു. മുമ്പുള്ള വകഭേദങ്ങളെക്കാളും ഏറ്റവും ചെറുതായിരുന്നു ഇത്. മൂന്ന് ഡോറുകളോടുള്ള കാറിന് പുറക് വശത്തായിരുന്നു എഞ്ചിൻ.
14 bhp കരുത്ത് നൽകുന്ന വാട്ടർ കൂളിങ്ങ് എഞ്ചിനും ഇതിനോട് ഘടിപ്പിച്ചിരുന്നു.
അങ്ങനെ നാല് സീറ്റോട് കൂടിയ മീര കാറിന്റെ അവസാന പതിപ്പ് പൂർത്തിയാക്കിയ കുൽക്കർണി, അത് 12000 രൂപയ്ക്ക് വിൽക്കാൻ പദ്ധതിയിട്ടിരുന്നു.
