Brad Pitt today hailed the courage of his fiance Angelina Jolie after she revealed that she has undergone a double mastectomy to lower the risk of her getting breast cancer - the disease that killed her mother almost a decade ago.

In an article for The New York Times entitled 'My Medical Choice,' Jolie says that she completed three months of medical procedures at the end of April that she had so far managed to keep out of the public eye.

Angelina Jolie has always been outspoken about issues that matter to her, and now, for the first time, she's revealing a very personal one: her decision to undergo a preventive double mastectomy after discovering she carries the BRCA1 gene, which increases the risk of developing breast and ovarian cancer.

'My doctors estimated that I had an 87 percent risk of breast cancer and a 50 percent risk of ovarian cancer, although the risk is different in each woman,' she writes in New York Times op-ed piece published in today's edition. Oscar-winning US actress Angelina Jolie has said she underwent a preventive double mastectomy. She chose the surgery after learning she carried a gene that makes it extremely likely she would get breast cancer.
Angelina Jolie made the announcement in the form of an op-ed she authored for Tuesday's New York Times under the headline, 'My Medical Choice.'
After genetic testing she learned she carries the 'faulty' BRCA1 gene and had an 87 percent chance of getting breast cancer herself.
Jolie, 37, said that she made the choice to get the procedure done with thoughts of her six children after watching her own mother die of breast cancer at the age of 56.
She said she wanted to share her story publicly with hope of helping other women.
'I wanted to write this to tell other women that the decision to have a mastectomy was not easy. But it is one I am very happy that I made,' she wrote. 'My chances of developing breast cancer have dropped from 87 percent to under 5 percent. I can tell my children that they don't need to fear they will lose me to breast cancer.'
Between early February and late April she completed the surgical procedures to remove both breasts and also completed a reconstruction with implants.
'I do not feel any less of a woman,' Jolie writes. 'I feel empowered that I made a strong choice that in no way diminishes my femininity.'

Angelina Jolie has revealed she has undergone a double mastectomy and reconstructive surgery.

The Oscar-winning actress made the decision to have both breasts removed as a preventative measure after discovering she had an 87 percent chance of developing breast cancer.

Tests revealed Jolie carries the defective gene, BRCA1, which significantly increases her risk of developing ovarian and breast cancer - the disease that killed her mother, Marcheline Bertrand, at the age of 56.

Carriers of the defective gene have, on average, a 65 percent chance of eventually suffering from breast cancer. Following three months of procedures, the chances of the actress developing breast cancer has fallen to five percent.

Jolie, who is also a Special Envoy of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, says she has gone public is an effort to raise awareness for testing - though she acknowledges many in the US would not be able to afford the test or the treatment.
