Brad Pitt today hailed the courage of his fiance Angelina Jolie after she revealed that she has undergone a double mastectomy to lower the risk of her getting breast cancer - the disease that killed her mother almost a decade ago.
In an article for The New York Times entitled 'My Medical Choice,' Jolie says that she completed three months of medical procedures at the end of April that she had so far managed to keep out of the public eye.
Jolie explains that her own mother died of breast cancer at the age of 56 and that she herself had the 'faulty' BRCA1 gene, which increased her chances of getting the disease to 87 per cent, and of getting ovarian cancer to 50 per cent.
Pitt called her decision to undergo a double mastectomy 'absolutely heroic'
Speaking to the Evening Standard, he said: “Having witnessed this decision first hand, I find Angie’s choice, as well as so many others like her, absolutely heroic. I thank our medical team for their care and focus'.
He added: 'All I want for is for her to have a long and healthy life, with myself and our children. This is a happy day for our family.”

The Oscar-winning actress revealed she underwent the procedure and reconstruction after learning she carried the BRCA1 gene, which gave her a 87% chance of developing breast cancer.
As a result of the preventative surgery the 37-year-old mother-of-six said her chances of being stricken are now just five per cent.
In a statement Pitt said: 'Having witnessed this decision firsthand, I find Angie's choice, as well as many others like her, absolutely heroic.
'All I want is for her to have a long and healthy life, with myself and our children. This is a happy day for our family.'
Speaking to USA Today, he added: 'I'm quite emotional about it, of course.
'She could have stayed absolutely private about it and I don't think anyone would have been none the wiser with such good results.
'But it was really important to her to share the story and that others would understand it doesn't have to be a scary thing.
'In fact, it can be an empowering thing, and something that makes you stronger and us stronger.'

Jolie, who lives with Hollywood star Brad Pitt, says in an article for the New York Times that her mother fought cancer for 10 years before her death.
She writes: 'My doctors estimated that I had an 87% risk of breast cancer and a 50% risk of ovarian cancer, although the risk is different in the case of each woman.
'Only a fraction of breast cancers result from an inherited gene mutation. Those with a defect in BRCA1 have a 65% risk of getting it, on average.
'Once I knew that this was my reality, I decided to be proactive and to minimise the risk as much I could. I made a decision to have a preventive double mastectomy.'
Jolie, 37, who has six children - three by Pitt and three adopted - goes on: 'On April 27, I finished the three months of medical procedures that the mastectomies involved.
'During that time I have been able to keep this private and to carry on with my work. But I am writing about it now because I hope that other women can benefit from my experience.
