Founding member of pioneering thrash metal band dies of liver failure
Just over two years after contracting a rare skin tissue disease, Slayer guitarist and songwriter Jeff Hanneman died on Thursday from liver failure at Hemet Valley Medical Center, near his home in Southern California's Inland Empire area.
Slayer made the news public on Thursday afternoon, announcing that the band 'is devastated' and calling Hanneman, who was 49, their bandmate and brother. Twitter quickly filled with messages from fans and fellow musicians, many of whom were in Los Angeles for the 5th Annual Revolver Golden Gods Awards show at Club Nokia. Disturbed/Device frontman David Draiman was among the very first, posting 'RIP TO A TITAN OF METAL,' while drummer Mike Portnoy wrote, 'WOW...I'm in shock...RIP Jeff Hanneman.'
Hanneman has been off the road since early 2011, when he contracted necrotizing fasciitis -- most likely from a spider bite -- a quick-progressing disease that literally eats away at the flesh from deep layers of skin and tissue. Exodus' Gary Holt stood in for Hanneman starting in February of 2011, while Pat O'Brien joined the band when Holt returned to Exodus during 2011.
It's not known what role the disease played in Hanneman's liver failure.
Throughout the ordeal, Hanneman's bandmates expressed optimism that he would one day return to the group full-.

Jeff Hanneman, the guitarist for the thrash metal band Slayer, died Thursday of liver failure, the band announced in a statement on its website.
'Slayer is devastated to inform that their bandmate and brother, Jeff Hanneman, passed away at about 11AM this morning near his Southern California home,' the statement said. 'Hanneman was in an area hospital when he suffered liver failure. He is survived by his wife Kathy, his sister Kathy and his brothers Michael and Larry, and will be sorely missed.'
As Billboard reports, Hanneman, 49, contracted necrotizing fasciitis, a rare skin tissue disease, two years ago most likely from a spider bite. It's not clear if the flesh-eating disease played in his death. Here's more from Billboard:
'Born in Oakland, Calif., and a devoted Raiders fan, Hanneman was raised primarily in Long Beach and became fascinated with wars and military campaigns — themes he'd bring to Slayer's music — via his father, a World War II veteran, and brothers who served in Vietnam. He met King in 1981 and decided to form their own band, mixing heavy metal and punk influences and signing with Metal Blade Records for Slayer's first two albums, Show No Mercy in 1983 and Hell Awaits in 1985. The group made an eyebrow-raising move to the hip-hop label Def Jam in 1986 for the covers album Undisputed Attitude and the classic Reign in Blood.'

Grammy-winning guitarist Jeff Hanneman, a founding member of the heavy metal band Slayer, died Thursday of liver failure in Southern California, the band said in a statement.
He was 49.
'Slayer is devastated to inform that their bandmate and brother, Jeff Hanneman, passed away at about 11 a.m. this morning near his Southern California home. Hanneman was in an area hospital when he suffered liver failure,' the band said in a statement posted on its website and Facebook page.
Hanneman leaves behind his wife, Kathy, a sister and two brothers.
'He ... will be sorely missed,' the band said.
The guitarist was with Slayer from its founding in 1981. Its breakthrough came five years later with the release of 'Reign in Blood,' an album that included two songs -- 'Angel of Death' and 'Raining Blood' -- co-written by Hanneman.
That was one of 10 studio albums that the band put out over three decades together, during which they performed thousands of shows.
On Slayer's official website, Hanneman said that the last one -- 'World Painted Blood' -- came together quickly because the band's members worked seamlessly.
'The interaction between all of us on this record was really something special,' he said. '... The chemistry was just good.'
In 2006 and 2007, Slayer won Grammy awards for best metal performance.

Jeff Hanneman, one of the founding guitarists of the pioneering thrash metal band Slayer, died today in Southern California of liver failure. He was 49.
Hanneman had been on hiatus from Slayer since early 2011, when he contracted necrotizing fasciitis, a flesh-eating disease that doctors believed might have been caused by a spider bite. Hanneman almost lost his arm, and was briefly placed in a medically-induced coma. After a series of skin grafts, he had been working on his physical rehabilitation, including playing guitar; the door had been left open for his return to Slayer upon recovery.
Hanneman performed on every Slayer release to date, and wrote many of the band's career-defining songs, including 'Angel of Death,' 'South of Heaven,' 'Raining Blood' and 'War Ensemble.' Hanneman and Kerry King perfected a fiery twin-lead guitar style that propelled Slayer to the forefront of the thrash metal movement of the early 1980s, where they were crowned as one of the genre's 'Big Four,' along with Metallica, Megadeth and Anthrax.

Guitarist Mark Abrahamian, who performed with Starship featuring Mickey Thomas, is dead at age 46, the band announced on Monday. He reportedly died due to a heart attack following a performance on September 2.
'We are shocked and saddened at the sudden loss of our guitar player Mark Abrahamian. We will miss you, brother. Rest in peace, Mark,' the band posted on its Twitter account.
Abrahamian had played with the longtime band, whose hits include 'We Built This City' and 'Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now,' since 2000. In addition to Twitter, the band also took to Facebook to mourn their friend.

They added via Facebook, 'Mark was a kind, thoughtful and innovative soul. He was also a friend and family member. Mark also happened to be one hell of a guitar player. We are devastated by the loss of our brother and just dealing with it the best we can.'
Abrahamian has been on tour with Starship starring Mickey Thomas since 2000. He has also played with the likes of Survivor, Toto, Loverboy and ACDC.
The band was scheduled to play a concert tonight in Utah, but canceled the show.
