Firefighters in Camarillo used helicopters, dozers and hand crews to battle a wind-fueled brush fire Thursday near the 101 Freeway in Camarillo.
Residents near a 100-acre fire burning along the 101 Freeway in Camarillo should prepare to leave their homes, an official said, but no evacuation orders had been issued as of Thursday morning.
“What we’re telling residents is be prepared to evacuate. There are some homes in the area,” Ventura County Fire Department spokesman Bill Nash said, adding that his was one of them. “Take the time now to get ready in case that order comes.”
An update from the Fire Department warned residents to 'gather important documents, medications and other irreplaceable belongings and be ready to evacuate.'
Nash said structure protection efforts were in place for the blaze, which began about 6:30 a.m. near hundreds of homes along the Conejo Grade of the freeway. The latest update from the department said the fire had scorched 100 acres and was uncontained.
The Ventura County Sheriff’s Department said at about 9:20 a.m. that the fire was moving toward Newbury Park, and residents in the Dos Vientos area were being advised to prepare to evacuate. The Red Cross had established an evacuation shelter at Calvary Community Chapel in Camarillo, the department said.

A more than 8,000-acre wind-driven brush fire that started Thursday morning at the base of the Conejo Grade near the southbound 101 Freeway has prompted thousands to evacuate and damaged at least 15 homes, 25 out buildings, power lines and several RVs at a storage facility.
The Springs Fire, which was initially reported as a 10-acre blaze near Camarillo Springs Road around 6:45 a.m., spread to 12.5 square miles and reached Pacific Coast Highway at Sycamore Canyon Road around 9 p.m.
“The fire is continuing to burn along PCH. What this means is the fire that broke out this morning has burned all the way to the coast. It’s a rapidly moving fire through heavy vegetation and it’s proving to be difficult for firefighters,” said Bill Nash of the Ventura County Fire Department. “There’s no place for (the fire) to go over the highway. We’re staging units at the PCH. We’ll try to be in front of it and stop it as it reaches the coastline.”
Roughly 925 personnel — including six hand crews, six choppers, five dozers and 96 engines — were batting the massive wildfire, which was at less than 10 percent containment, according to Nash. No injuries were reported.

Update 9:13 p.m.: Ventura County fire officials say an 8,000-acre wildfire has topped a ridge and reached the Pacific Coast Highway, the Associated Press reported.
Fire Capt. Bill Nash says the fire reached the PCH — which had been closed for the second time in a day — at about 9 p.m. Thursday night.
Nash says the wildfire is still growing and the 10 percent containment the department had cited earlier was likely to be reduced.
By sunset firefighters had gained ground against the blaze that broke out along U.S. 101 and threatened 2,000 homes.
But a late surged forced a new series of evacuations and the PCH shutdown.
No one has been injured and no homes have been destroyed, but 25 homes were damaged.
