Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto is commemorating Cinco de Mayo by urging his countrymen to tackle current problems with the same 'unity and commitment' that defeated the French 151 years ago.
Pena Nieto says the holiday celebrates principles that, in his words, 'encourage the political forces and federal government to pursue a transformative reform agenda that the country demands and needs.'
Cinco de Mayo marks the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862, when Mexican troops defeated a French army of Napoleon III, then considered the mightiest military in the world.
The anniversary was marked Sunday with a military parade in the city of Puebla, where the battle took place. It is considered a bigger holiday in the U.S., celebrating Mexican heritage with parades and revelry in many major cities.

Mexican Fried Wontons -- Cinco de Mayo Recipe
Cinco de mayo is coming up and I thought I'd make some fun Mexican wontons to celebrate.
Ingredients:
18 wonton wrappers
½ lb ground beef - browned
4oz of shredded taco cheese
¾ tsp garlic salt
1 tsp crushed red pepper
1 tbsp cornstarch
2½ cups peanut oil
Mix the cheese and beef and then place them in the microwave on high for about 40 seconds, or just until the cheese melts. Melting the cheese first makes this filling easier to place in the wonton wrappers.
Drain out any excess oil then add the garlic salt and red pepper and stir.
In a small bowl mix together the cornstarch with some cold water and stir until the cornstarch dissolves -- this will be used to seal the wontons.
Fill the wontons by putting a teaspoon of the filling in the center. Then using a finger wet all of the edges with the cornstarch mixture press firmly to seal.
Then heat the peanut oil in a wok on high and when hot, add the wontons, and cook them for about 3 minutes, or until they just brown.
Remove them with a slotted spoon draining off any excess oil and place them on a plate and serve. Makes about 18 wontons.

To celebrate Cinco de Mayo, 4-year-old Andrea Urquizo donned a traditional Mexican dress and waved a large American flag from the back of a truck during a parade on Chicago's West Side.
Andrea's father urged his daughter to join the festivities so she could gain a better understanding of the historical day. He also wanted the girl — who was born in the U.S. — to learn more about her family's Mexican heritage.
'She knows who her president is, she knows a lot of things about the U.S. already,' said Jose Adrian Urquizo, president of the Federacion Unidos Por Zacatecas. 'But I want her to know both cultures. .. I want her to respect both cultures.'
On a picturesque Sunday, hundreds of people lined Cermak Road as they watched the Cinco de Mayo parade — a procession of men on horses, tumblers, large bands and women wearing colorful, skirts dancing to Mexican music. Shouts of 'Viva Mexico' filled the air. To get a good look, children sat on their parents' shoulders as they clutched miniature American and Mexican flags. Women shaded themselves from the sun with umbrellas, and toddlers wore tiny sombreros.
Meanwhile, less than 2 miles away, crowds flocked to a Cinco de Mayo festival in Douglas Park, where people rode carnival rides and weaved in and out of small white tents where vendors sold soccer jerseys and purses that read 'I (heart) Mexico.'

On Cinco de Mayo we celebrate the contributions and heritage of Mexican Americans and we recognize the strong cultural, familial, and economic ties that bind the United States and Mexico.
This week, I was proud to visit Mexico to reaffirm our vision for the Americas as a region of shared opportunity and prosperity. I left even more convinced that we have historic opportunities to expand trade and make our economies even more competitive, so that we continue creating good jobs in both of our countries.
In Mexico, I also emphasized the need to pass commonsense immigration reform that lives up to our tradition as a nation of laws and a nation of immigrants, including generations of Mexican Americans who have enriched our country. Fixing our immigration system is one of my top legislative priorities and I am hopeful that we can make immigration reform a reality this year.
Cinco de Mayo reminds us that America’s diversity is America’s strength. Today, as we celebrate the contributions and history of Mexican Americans and Hispanics in America, let us celebrate the larger story of America and our unique immigrant heritage.
