As perhaps the most omnipresent personality in her sport, Danica Patrick was in typically transcendent form Sunday at Daytona International Speedway.
But on this historic day at the World Center of Racing, the focus was all on her on-track performance — becoming the first woman in the 65-year history of NASCAR's premier series to capture the pole position.

And in this case, Patrick, 30, will be starting first in stock-car racing's signature event: next Sunday's Daytona 500.

'It's also nice to hear families talk about that a little girl might say, 'But mommy, daddy, that's a girl out there.' A week after finishing 8th in the Sprint Cup Series' opening race, Patrick's car lost a tire on lap 176 exiting turn four during Sunday's Subway 500 at Phoenix International Raceway and smashed hard into the wall. After rebounding off of the SAFER barrier, Patrick's car collected David Ragan.
Ragan hit Patrick's at such an angle that it sheared off the sheetmetal on the left side of Patrick's car like a can opener, spraying safety foam from the inside of the car everywhere.
Patrick, who got out and walked away from the accident, wasn't the first driver on the day to suffer tire issues, as teammate Ryan Newman, among others, had previously hit the wall twice with right front problems. She said that there was no warning of any tire issues with her car before the crash and that the car suddenly drove straight to the right on her. Phoenix's flat layout is notoriously hard on brakes, especially those of ill-handling cars. Right front tires can have problems because of the buildup in brake heat from excessive usage in the corners.
Patrick officially started 40th and struggled with the handling of her car all day, never making much progress through the field before crashing. She finished 39th.

As if a headache and sore neck following a hard crash in last week's Phoenix race wasn't bad enough for Danica Patrick, her night as a dirt track race fan could have been better.
Patrick, attending a race at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway dirt track, took a rock to the head on Thursday night, she said Friday.

'I feel like I have a concussion from last night,' she said, joking. 'It's really sore. It hit me straight in the head. Good thing I had a hat on, or I feel like there would have been blood.'
Patrick's boyfriend, Ricky Stenhouse Jr., owns the Stenhouse Jr. Racing team and fields dirt cars. And team owner Tony Stewart also is a dirt track aficionado -- he races on them and owns Eldora Speedway.
Joe Crowley, who is part of Patrick's public relations team, said Patrick had a prescheduled meeting with NASCAR medical Friday to follow up on some paperwork from her Phoenix crash.
Since NASCAR had heard of the rock incident, they gave her a minor checkup and asked if she was OK.
As for Phoenix, where Patrick blew a tire, sending her car hard into the wall, the Sprint Cup Series rookie said she experienced a sore neck for the first time after a crash.
Patrick said she did not believe she had a concussion — 'I really felt fine,' she said — and was cleared by the medical staff.

Blazing a trail that was previously paved by such pioneers as Janet Guthrie and Shawna Robinson, Danica Patrick set a new standard when she became the first woman in NASCAR history to win a pole position for a Sprint Cup race.
But it wasn’t just any race.
Patrick, 30, of Roscoe, Ill., claimed the pole position for NASCAR’s biggest race, the season-opening Daytona 500, when she turned a fast lap of 196.434 miles per hour in her No. 10 GoDaddy.com Chevrolet fielded by Stewart-Haas Racing.
Patrick, a contender for Rookie of the Year honors, toured the high-banked, superspeedway at Daytona International Speedway in 45.817 seconds, tightly hugging the apron all away around the 2.5-mile tri-oval.
Asked what her overriding emotion was after accomplishing her historic feat, Patrick replied, “Pride. I’m proud of all the hard work that goes into making a pole car. It’s not just me turning laps, it’s so many other things. It’s all the attention to detail these guys put in over the winter. I can’t be more proud off them.'
Sharing the same Hendrick-developed power that put Patrick on the pole, Jeff Gordon earned a spot on the front row of the 43-car grid with his lap of 196.292 m.p.h.
'Congratulations to Danica, it's great to be a part of history,” Gordon said, before adding with a chuckle. 'At least, I can say I was the fastest guy today.'
