A man with a semi-automatic rifle killed at least four people and wounded several others Friday as he carried out a deadly rampage across several blocks of a normally idyllic beachfront city before police shot him dead in the Santa Monica College Library.
Police said earlier that seven people were killed, including the gunman.
The violence began when the gunman, dressed in all black and wearing what appeared to be a ballistic jacket, opened fire on a house where the bodies of the gunman's father and brother were found, authorities said.
As the house burst into flames, the man wounded a woman in a car before moving toward the campus, spraying bullets as he went. Police said he opened fire on a city bus, a police car and other vehicles, as well as bystanders and pedestrians.
He killed three people on the street before shooting at an SUV leaving a campus parking lot. That vehicle's driver was killed and two passengers were wounded as the car crashed through a block wall.
From there, the gunman entered the campus, shooting a woman as he made his way toward the college's library, where students were studying for final exams.
'It appears that those who were encountered on the street were random victims,' Santa Monica Police Chief Jacqueline Seabrooks said.

Santa Monica College was placed on lockdown Friday after reports that a suspect fired a gun inside a campus building just before noon.
Five people -- including the gunman -- are dead after a shooting rampage that began at a residence and ended on campus. Several people are being treated for their wounds; one was critically wounded, one is in serious but stable condition and three had minor injuries, confirmed Santa Monica Police Sergeant Richard Lewis during an 8:20 p.m. PST press conference.
Two of the victims, found in a burning house on the 2000 block of Yorkshire Avenue, are believed to be the brother and father of the gunman, the Los Angeles Times reports. Lewis didn't confirm the relationship except to say it could be a possibility.
At the time of the press conference, police believe there was only one shooter, added Sgt. Lewis. One person they took into custody after the shooting was questioned and then released.
The total shooting rampage spans about one mile, according to Lewis, and police were investigating nine crime scenes by the time of the press conference.
The crime began on the 2000 block of Yorkshire Avenue, where two bodies were found in a burning house. After the shooter left the house, he shot at one vehicle, seriously injuring the driver. He then carjacked another driver, forcing her to drive him.

Santa Monica Police Chief Jacqueline Seabrooks described a violent shooting rampage that appears to have begun in the 2000 block of Yorkshire Avenue just before noon.
Two people were found dead on Yorkshire Avenue and a home was on fire, authorities said.
The gunman then moved west along Pico Boulevard, firing at cars, including a bus and a police vehicle.
One person died at Cloverfield and Pico boulevards; two died at 19th Street and Pico Boulevard. Another woman died at the hospital.
Seabrooks said the gunman may not have acted alone. A second 'person of interest' is in custody.
'We are not convinced 100% that the suspect who was killed operated in solo or a lone capacity,' Seabrooks said.
The suspect fled onto Santa Monica College, where he was pursued by police. He shot a woman on campus and ran into the library, where he continued to fire rounds from an assault rifle.
Authorities shot and killed the gunman on campus. He has not yet been identified, but police described him as being 25 to 30 years old.
They have detained a second man, who has not been identified. He is considered a person of interest.

A woman injured during a shooting rampage that ended at Santa Monica College on Friday afternoon has died, officials from Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center said.
Two other people have been confirmed dead inside a home that was set on fire in Santa Monica, law enforcement sources said.
Authorities said a gunman allegedly set the home on fire, opened fire on several cars and appeared to try to carjack two vehicles. One of the attempted carjackings occurred near the campus library and college police station.
The suspect fled to the library, where he was wounded by police, the sources added.
The FBI and Santa Monica police are trying to piece together the sequence of the attack, which prompted the lockdown of Santa Monica College and all schools throughout the city.
Students who were studying in the library described a scene of terror, which many people hiding under tables.
Dustin Hahn, 25, a photo and business major, said he was in the back of the library when the shots were fired.
He had been there since 9 a.m. studying and taking an online final. He said he was almost finished with the test when he was jolted out of his concentration.
'First thing I heard was a really loud boom. It sounded kind of like a bomb,' he said. Hahn said there had been a lot of construction going on around the area of campus, so he didn't think much of it.
