इंडोनेशिया के असेह प्रांत में आए 6.5 तीव्रता के शक्तिशाली भूंकप से जहां 54 से ज्यादा लोगों की मौत हो गई है, तो वहीं सैंकड़ों लोग घायल हो गए हैं। फिलहाल मलबे में दर्जनों लोगों के फंसे होने की आशंका है। बताया जा रहा है कि सुमात्रा दीप के असेह प्रांत में भूकंप उस वक्त आया जब नमाज़ अदा की जा रही थी। अमेरिकी जियोलॉजिकल के मुताबिक भूकंप सुबह 5 बजकर 3 मिनट पर रयूल्यूट से करीब 10 किलोमीटर उत्तर की दिशा में आया था। भूकंप इतना जोरदार था कि कुछ ही लम्हों में कई मस्जिदें और दुकानें ढह गईं। चारों तरफ अफरा तफरी मच गई। इस तबाही में 54 लोगों की जान चली गई तो वहीं सैकड़ों लोग गंभीर रूप से जख्मी हो गए है। स्थानीय अधिकारियों की मानें तो बड़ी संख्या में घायलों को अस्पताल पहुंचाया गया है। हालांकि इस दौरान मलबे में दर्जनों लोगों के फंसे होने की आशंका जताई जा रही है। दबे लोगों को खोजने के लिए बचाव अभियान जारी है। बचावकर्मी मलबे को हटाने के लिए भारी मशीनरी का इस्तेमाल कर रहे हैं। बहरहाल भूकंप के कारण जान-माल का भारी नुकसान होता देख प्रशासन ने येलो अलर्ट जारी कर दिया है।

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Hawaii said a tsunami watch was in effect for Indonesia, India, Sri Lanka, Australia, Myanmar, Thailand, the Maldives and other Indian Ocean islands, Malaysia, Pakistan, Somalia, Oman, Iran, Bangladesh, Kenya, South Africa and Singapore.
Earthquake and tsunami experts say that the waves are likely to be more than 6 metres high.
