“We are facing challenging situations right now. You must be aware that few years back the world witnessed serious economic crisis. The situation is worse in some parts of the world even today. We also had to face a lot of trouble. We have to buy most of the oil from outside and the prices of the same has increased manifold. The increase in the prices puts pressure on us also. The UPA government still is making an effort to support people; why can't state governments do the same for people?†and asked “Is it not the responsibility of the state governments also to take all possible measures to help the poor in their states? In Congress- ruled states, economically weaker sections get three extra LPG cylinders and they also reduced the VAT on fuelâ€. .

Congress President and UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi on Sunday encouraged the partymen with an aggressive speech defending her party and the UPA government at the centre. She also reiterated that only Congress is committed to work for the benefits of the poor. Sonia Gandhi said “The Congress Government is also very much conscious about this and we have been trying our level best to take up measures to reduce the burden of the aam aadmiâ€.

It is for the benefit of the farmers and aam aadmi the Central government decided to allow FDI in retail. By this policy, the farmers will be able to get proper and adequate prices for their produce by selling their goods directly at the markets. Further the common man would be able to get their security needs at a fair and affordable price. The farmers engaged in agriculture suffer a lot because of the shortage of cold storages and their products get rotten. The FDI will address this serious problem also. But he BJP is engaged in false propaganda against our FDI in retail policy. The important thing is that every state has the liberty not to implement FDI in their state. It seems that BJP is not at all bothered about the issues of the farmers and they are interested only to protect their narrow political interests.

Attacking the BJP government for not implementing the central schemes effectively, the Congress President continued, “The UPA Government at the centre released huge financial assistance for education, health, employment generation and welfare of the women. But it is very sad that the state government did not use these funds properly and as a result the benefits of the central schemes did not reach the poor. There is no improvement in the lives of the poor. The people face a lot of difficulties because of the lack of facilities in education and health. You should keep all these facts in mind before casting your votes and I appeal to all of you to ensure the defeat of the anti-poor BJP government hereâ€. Referring the price rise Sonia Gandhi said

Congress President and UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi while addressing a Congress rally in Mangalore in Karnataka, asked the ruling BJP government in Karnataka what have it done for the welfare of the people. She also slammed the BJP by saying that it never took any serious action to fight corruption.
“As you all know we have no control on the international prices of oil which have gone up from 40 dollars per barrels 10 years ago, to 140 dollars per barrel today. You know that we import 80% of crude oil from which we make petrol, diesel, kerosene and cooking gas. We continue to subsidise kerosene which must be done. But we have been compelled and we have no option but to increase the prices of diesel and the cooking gas. In spite of these, UPA government is doing its best not to burden the people with more hardships. As we hold the responsibility as a Government at the Centre, the state government also has some responsibility. I want to ask the BJP government here why have not the government increase the limit of LPG cylinders to a family from 6 to 9. This is what our Congress government has done in the states ruled by us. Why has the Karnataka Government not reduced the VAT on diesel, just like our Congress led governments have done? So it is very easy to criticize others but what about you (the state government), what are you doing to reduce the hardships of your people? It is your (state government’s) responsibility as much as ours†said Sonia Gandhi.
