Major Dhoundiyal laid down his life-fighting terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir's Pulwama and was awarded Shaurya Chakra (posthumously) for his sacrifice for the nation.

साल 2019 में हुए पुलवामा हमले में मेजर विभूति शंकर ढौंडियाल शहीद हो गए थे। उनकी शादी हमले से 9 महीने पहले ही हुई थी। उनकी पत्नी निकिता ढौंडियाल ने उसी वक़्त ठान लिया था कि वो पति के नक़्शे कदम पर चलते हुए अपना जीवन भी देश सेवा में गुजारेंगी और आर्मी ज्वाइन करेंगी। आज उनका सपना आखिरकार पूरा हो गया। ऑफिसर्स ट्रेनिंग एकेडमी में आयोजित पासिंग आउट परेड के बाद लेफ्टिनेंट जनरल वाईके जोशी ने उनके कंधे पर सितारे लगाकर उनको बधाई दी। निकिता ने पिछले साल इलाहाबाद में वूमेन एंट्री स्कीम की परीक्षा पास करने के बाद चेन्नई की ऑफिसर्स ट्रेनिंग एकेडमी से ट्रेनिंग ली।
