The league’s current edition was abruptly postponed owing to the increasing number of Covid-19 cases inside the bio-bubble of different teams across different cities. With 29 games being conducted, the edition still has 31 unfinished games, not completing which could cause severe financial losses to the apex board of cricket in India.
As the BCCI plans for the smoothest possible resumption of the league, there are challenges aplenty with a busy international calendar and ICC’s Future Tour Programme (FTP) commitments looming over multiple teams. For instance, Australia has a tour to the Caribbean set in line from late June onwards, and later a one-off Test against Afghanistan, followed by the Ashes.
Australia, in the middle of this, is also planning to tour Bangladesh for a five-match T20I series, while England has two away series against Pakistan and Bangladesh respectively, after they play India at home. BCCI will also have to keep an eye on the Caribbean Premier League schedule (from August 28 to September 19) which poses the threat of many West Indies stars missing out from the IPL.
Another severe challenge for the board remains to ensure that the players are not burnt out, given all the teams have to participate in the T20 World Cup. India is set to tour UK for six Tests, which includes a five-Test series against England, preceded by the World Test Championship final against New Zealand. India also has plans in place to play South Africa in a white-ball home series, whereas New Zealand was set to tour India for two-Test series later this year.

In a major development around the 14th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL), the tournament is likely to be played from September 19 to October 10. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had confirmed a couple of days ago, after its Special General Meeting (SGM), that the remaining 31 matches of the IPL will be played in the UAE.
Moreover, it has also been understood that allowing crowds isn’t a major concern for the Emirates Cricket Board (ECB) and the BCCI unless for an intervention from the local government. The UAE government policy is to allow the fans for the sporting events with a condition that they’re vaccinated.
The BCCI President Sourav Ganguly, secretary Jay Shah, treasurer Arun Singh Dhumal, vice-president Rajeev Shukla and joint secretary Jayesh George have reportedly landed in Dubai on Monday. With the travel restrictions due to the pandemic, the ECB officials had to obtain special permission for the landing of the BCCI delegation. The purpose of the visit seems to be finalising logistical and operational requirements.
There could be discussions over the concessional price of hotels who are said to have been quoting a huge amount. The ECB officials are confident of pulling off the 31 matches of IPL 2021 given their experience of hosting a full tournament comprising 60 matches last year. Moreover, they’ve also got close to 100 days to prepare for the competition.
Having said that, the ECB is understood to have been worried about hosting the ICC T20 World Cup. Currently, India are the hosts, but UAE has been kept as a back-up venue due to the upsurge in COVID cases. A lot of cricket is set to be played in the UAE starting from June with PSL set to resume in Abu Dhabi (20 matches as of now).

Australian quick Pat Cummins stayed with his former team Kolkata Knight Riders, bagging an INR 7.25 crore deal on the first day of the IPL 2022 mega auction. Cummins, who was slotted in as one of the ten marquee players that set the auction ball rolling, attracted bids from KKR and both new members Gujarat Titans and Lucknow Super Giants before KKR occupied him.
Cummins, who recently led Australia to a more-than-convincing 4-0 victory in the home Ashes, has 38 wickets at an average and strike rate of 30.13 and 21.95 in his 37-match IPL career. He could well double-up with the bat with quick runs at the backend of the innings – as his batting strike rate of nearly 141 suggests – apart from being a part of the leadership group, if not the captain itself.

In what can be called a major blow for Kolkata Knight Riders, Pat Cummins has been ruled out of the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 due to a hip injury. As a result, the Australian Test captain has left the team’s bio-bubble to head towards Sydney. Meanwhile, Cummins’ injury isn’t too serious and he’s expected to regain full fitness within a couple of weeks.
As the talismanic fast bowler has been rested for the T20I series against Sri Lanka next month, his fitness issues aren’t likely to hamper the national team’s plans. He anyway is expected to be available for the ODI and Test tour of Sri Lanka. However, his ouster might hamper KKR’s chances of going through to the playoffs. After warming the benches for few games, Cummins made a thunderous return to KKR line-up recently, scalping a match-winning three-wicket haul.
Hence, the Shreyas Iyer-led side would largely miss his services. Meanwhile, this major report was carried out by cricket.com.au. It also must be noted that KKR have endured a hard time in the competition and are currently reeling at the seventh place with five victories in 12 outings. Former Indian batter Yuvraj Singh was surprised by the exclusion of Pat Cummins from the playing XI for the Kolkata Knight Riders for the game against Delhi Capitals. The Australian all-rounder was dropped from the lineup in the previous game with Tim Southee taking his pace and the latter went on to pick three wickets to keep his place in the side.
Cummins pulled off a stunning inning against the Mumbai Indians earlier with a 14-ball 50 and equaled the record of the fastest half-century of all time in IPL as well. However, apart from the match-winning knock with the bat, Cummins has failed to live up to his reputation with the ball and has been quite expensive at the back end of the innings. To add to his woes, he wasn’t getting enough wickets in the powerplay as well and it piled up a lot of pressure on him.
However, legendary batter Yuvraj wasn’t convinced by Cummins’s omission and noted that he was surprised to see the Australian on the bench unless he is injured. He felt that Cummins being a world-class all-rounder will win more games more often than not even if he misfires in a few of the matches.
Earlier Delhi Capitals won the toss and chose to bowl first at the Wankhede Stadium. KKR made three changes to their lineup with Baba Indrajith and Harshit Rana making their IPL debuts while Aaron Finch came into the lineup in place of Sam Billings. Shivam Mavi and Varun Chakravarthy had to miss out on the playing XI for KKR while Delhi Capitals presented the first opportunity to Chetan Sakariya this season.
