ഖനനം മൂലം നിരവധി പ്രതിസന്ധികളാണ് ആലപ്പാടിലെ ജനങ്ങള് അനുഭവിച്ചു കൊണ്ടിരിക്കുന്നത്. ജനജീവിത ദുസ്സഹമാവുകയും തൊഴില് സാധ്യതകള് മാഞ്ഞുകൊണ്ടും ഇരിക്കുകയാണ്. മത്സ്യ ബന്ധനവും അതുമായി ചേര്ന്ന് കിടക്കുന്ന മേഖലയിലും തൊഴില് ചെയ്യുന്നവര് ഒക്കെയും ഉപേക്ഷിച്ചു പോകേണ്ടി വന്നിട്ടുണ്ട്. അയ്യായിരത്തോളം കുടുംബങ്ങളാണ് ഖനനം മൂലം ഭൂ രഹിതരാവുകയും കുടിയൊഴിപ്പിക്കപ്പെടുകയും ചെയ്തത് എന്നാണു കണക്കുകള് സൂചിപ്പിക്കുന്നത്. ചാകര എന്ന പ്രതിഭാസം കൊല്ലം ആലപ്പുഴ ജില്ലകളുടെ തീരദേശത്തിനു ഇന്ന് നഷ്ടമാകുവാന് കാരണം ഈ മണല് ഖനനം തന്നെയാണ് .തീരം ചേര്ന്ന് എക്കലും ചെളിയും അടിഞ്ഞുകൂടി കുഴമ്പ് രൂപത്തില് കാണുന്നതും തീരത്തെ സംരക്ഷിക്കുന്നതും മത്സ്യ സമ്പത്തിന്റെ പ്രജനനതിനു ഗുണം ചെയ്യുന്നതുമായ പ്രതിഭാസമാണ് ചാകര. തീരം ചേര്ന്ന് തിരമാലകള് ശാനതാംയിരിക്കുന്നതിനും ഈ പ്രതിഭാട്സം അനിവാര്യമാണ് . ആലപ്പാടിന്റെ തെക്ക് ഭാഗം മുതല് വടക്ക് ഭാഗം വരെ തീരാ മേഖലയിലുണ്ടായിരുന്ന സ്വാഭാവിക കണ്ടാല് ക്കടുകളും ഖനനം മൂലം ആലപ്പാടിനു നഷ്ടമായി കണ്ടല്ക്കടിനോട് ചേര്ന്ന് ഉണ്ടായിരുന്ന മത്സ്യ സമ്പത്തും ഇതോടെ ശോഷിച്ചു . ഖനനത്തിന്റെ ഫലമായി തീരസംരക്ഷനതിനായി വച്ച് പിടിപ്പിച്ചിരുന്ന കാറ്റാടി മരങ്ങളും നഷ്ടപ്പെട്ടു . തീര ശോഷണത്തിനും നാശത്തിനും വേഗത കൂടിയത് ഇങ്ങനെയാണ് .ജലസ്രോതസ്സിനുണ്ടായ നാശം ആണ് തീരാ ദേശവാസികള് അനുഭവിച്ച മറ്റൊരു ദുരന്തം
ഖനന് പ്രദേശത്ത് ശുദ്ധ ജലം ലഭ്യമായിരുന്ന തണ്ണീര് തടങ്ങളും കിണറുകളും മറ്റു ഉറവകളും ഖനന ഫലമായി വറ്റി വരണ്ടു നശിച്ചു പോയി . ശുദ്ധജല ഉപയോഗത്തില് സ്വയം പര്യാപ്തത കൈവരിച്ച ഈ പഞ്ചായത്ത് ഇന്ന് ശുദ്ധ ജലത്തിനായി സമരം ചെയ്യുകയാണ് . ഇതിലൊക്കെ ഉപരി അല്പാദ് ജനങ്ങള് ഏറ്റവും നാശ നഷ്ടങ്ങള് അഭിമുഖീകരിച്ചത് സുനാമിയിലൂടെ ആയിരുന്നു ലക്ഷദ്വീപ് കടല് മേഖലയില് സുനാമി തിരമാലകള് മൂലം കന്യാകുമാരി കഴിഞ്ഞാല് കേരളത്തില് ഏറ്റവും കൂടുതല് ജീവനും സ്വത്തിനും നാശനഷ്ടമുണ്ടായത് ആലപ്പാട് പന്ച്ഛയതിലാണ് . പഞ്ചായതിലുണ്ടായിരുന്ന പ്രകൃതി ദത്തമായ മണല് കൂനകള് ഖനനം മൂലം ഇല്ലാതാവുകയും തല്ഫലമായി കടലാക്രമണ പ്രതിരോധ ശേഷി നഷ്ടപ്പെട്ടതിന്റെയും ഫലമായിരുന്നു ആലപ്പാട് അഭിമുഖീകരിച്ചു ദുരന്തം .
