മനുഷ്യനിൽ നിന്ന് മറ്റ് ജീവികളിലേക്ക് വ്യാപിക്കുന്ന ബാക്റ്റീരിയകൾ അന്റാർട്ടിക്കയിലെ ജന്തുവിഭാഗങ്ങളെ ബാധിക്കുന്നില്ലെന്നായിരുന്നു ശാസ്ത്രജ്ഞരുടെ വിശ്വാസം. ആ നിഗമനത്തെ തകിടം മറിക്കുന്ന വർത്തയാണിപ്പോൾ ശാസ്ത്രലോകം കേട്ടത്. തെളിവുകളടക്കമാണ് മനുഷ്യശരീരത്തിൽ നിന്ന് ബാക്റ്റീരിയകൾ ജീവന് ഭീഷണിയാകുന്ന തരത്തിൽ പെൻഗ്വിനുകളെ ബാധിക്കുന്നതായി കണ്ടെത്തിയത്.റിവേഴ്‌സ് സൂനോസിസ് (reverse zoonosis) അഥവ മനുഷ്യനിൽ നിന്ന് ബാക്ടീരിയ മൃഗങ്ങളിലേക്ക് പകരുന്ന വാർത്തകൾ അന്റാർട്ടിക്കയിൽ അങ്ങിങ്ങായി റിപ്പോർട്ട്‌ ചെയ്തിരുന്നു. ഗുരുതരമായ വിഷയമായി ഇതിനെ കാണുന്നതും സജീവമായ പഠനം നടക്കുന്നതും ഇതാദ്യമായാണ്.കടല്പക്ഷികളുടെ ജീവന് ഭീഷണിയാകുന്ന തരത്തിൽ ഇവ ബാധിക്കുന്നതായാണ് റിപോർട്ടുകൾ.“തെക്കൻ സമുദ്രഭാഗങ്ങളിൽ ഗൗരവമായ പഠനം ആദ്യമായി നടന്നതും ഫലം പുറത്തുവന്നതും ഞെട്ടലുണ്ടാക്കി. റിവേഴ്‌സ് സൂനോസിസ് അന്റാർട്ടിക്കയിൽ വ്യാപിക്കുകയാണ്”- ജേക്കബ് സോലിസ് (Jacob Solis- ഗവേഷകൻ, ബാഴ്‌സലോണ സർവകലാശാല)പെൻഗ്വിൻ, ബ്രൗൺ സ്കുവസ്, കെൽപ് ഗൾ എന്നീ പക്ഷികളിലാണ് മനുഷ്യനിൽ കാണുന്ന ബാക്റ്റീരിയകളായ ക്യാമ്പയ്‌ലൊബാക്ടർ (campylobacter), സാൽമൊണല്ല (salmonella) എന്നിവയുടെ സാന്നിധ്യമുളളത്. സയൻസ് ഓഫ് ദ ടോട്ടൽ എൻവയോൺമെന്റ് (Science of the total enivironment) മാസികയിലാണ് ഈ പഠനം പ്രസിദ്ധീകരിച്ചത്.നാല് മേഖലകളിൽ നിന്നായി 600ലധികം പക്ഷികളുടെ വിസർജ്യം ശേഖരിച്ചാണ് പഠനം നടത്തിയത്. ഇതിൽ മൂന്ന് മേഖലകളിൽ റിവേഴ്‌സ് സൂനോസിസിന്റെ സാന്നിധ്യം സ്‌ഥിരീകരിച്ചു.അമേരിക്കയിലും യൂറോപ്പിലും മനുഷ്യരിൽ ഭക്ഷ്യവിഷബാധയ്ക്ക് കാരണമാകുന്ന ക്യാമ്പയ്‌ലോബാക്ടർ ജെജുനി ബാക്റ്റീരിയയുടെ സാന്നിധ്യം ഈ പക്ഷികളിൽ കാണാനായി. എന്നാൽ മനുഷ്യരിൽ സാധാരണ ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്ന ആന്റിബയോട്ടിക്കുകളോടും വെറ്ററിനറി ആന്റിബയോട്ടിക്കുകളോടും ഇവ ചെറുത്തുനിൽക്കുമെന്നാണ് റിപ്പോർട്ട്‌. മൃഗങ്ങളിൽ ഈ ബാക്റ്റീരിയ ബാധ വഴി ഉയർന്ന മരണനിരക്ക് രേഖപ്പെടുത്തിയിട്ടില്ല. എങ്കിലും കൂടുതൽ ബാക്റ്റീരിയകൾ മൃഗങ്ങളുടെ ശരീരത്തിൽ കടന്നുകൂടാനുള്ള സാധ്യതയാണ് ഇവ ഒരുക്കുക. സന്ദർശക നിയന്ത്രണമാണ് ഏക പോംവഴിയായി ഗവേഷകർ നിർദേശിക്കുന്നത്. ഓരോ വർഷവും സന്ദർശകരുടെ എണ്ണം കുത്തനെ കൂടുന്ന സ്‌ഥലങ്ങളിൽ ഒന്ന

A Mississippi baby born with the AIDS virus appears to have been cured after being treated with an aggressive regimen of drugs just after her birth 2½ years ago, an unusual case that could trigger changes in care for hundreds of thousands of babies born globally each year with HIV.
The findings, reported Sunday by researchers, mark only the second documented case of a patient being cured of infection with the human immune-deficiency virus. The first, an adult man known as the Berlin patient, was cured as a result of a 2007 bone-marrow transplant.
The new case was discovered after the baby girl's mother stopped treatment on her, and doctors realized that the virus was undetectable even without drugs, which HIV patients normally must take for the rest of their lives.
Researchers cautioned that the report on the baby girl involves just one patient, and the findings appear to have little immediate relevance to people who contract HIV as adults or adolescents and are almost always diagnosed and treated long after their initial infection. But if further study confirms that very early treatment can cure HIV-infected newborns, it could spur widespread use of such an aggressive regimen in babies born with HIV, nearly all of them in low- and middle-income countries.
