Japan earthquake 7.3 Magnitude December 7 2012
Japanese authorities issued a tsunami alert for the northeast coast Friday after a powerful 7.3-magnitude undersea earthquake struck, setting buildings in Tokyo swaying violently.
Media reports said a one-metre-high wave could sweep ashore in an area badly hit by the March 2011 tsunami that devastated a large swathe of the northeast coast, killing thousands.
Residents of at least one town, Minamisanriku in Miyagi prefecture, were advised to evacuate to higher ground, reports said, suggesting other towns were also affected.
It was not possible immediately to confirm the reports, with telephone operator NTT saying the network was jammed with the weight of callers.
A presenter on state broadcaster NHK repeatedly told viewers to get to safety.
'Remember last year's quake and tsunami,' he said. 'Call on your neighbours and flee to higher ground now!'
NHK, quoting the national meteorological agency, said the tsunami was expected to hit the coast of Iwate at 5:40 pm (0840 GMT), Fukushima at 5:50 pm, and Aomori and Ibaraki at 6:00 pm.
The United States Geological Survey measured the quake's magnitude at 7.3. It said the tremor struck a relatively deep 36 kilometres (23 miles) under the Pacific.
The epicentre was 284 kilometres (176 miles) east of Sendai, or 459 kilometres (285 miles) northeast of Tokyo, according to the USGS.

A powerful earthquake rocked Japan today, sparking a tsunami warning in the same region that was devastated by huge waves last year.
The quake, in the north eastern Miyagi region, was 7.3 in magnitude and tremors were felt nearly 200 miles away in Tokyo, where buildings shook violently for several minutes, the Japanese Meteorological Agency said.
Power supplies were hit, trains were halted and an airport runway shut.
A 3ft tsunami struck the town of Ishinomaki, but there were no casualties.
Resident Chikako Iwai said: “I was in the centre of the city.
'I immediately jumped into the car and started escaping towards the mountains. I’m still hiding inside the car.'
When a tsunami hit the region in March 2011, nearly 19,000 people were killed or listed missing.
It was 9.0 in magnitude and it battered the Fukushima plant in the world’s worst nuclear crisis since Chernobyl.
As the latest quake struck, the NHK TV network urged: “Remember last year. Call on your neighbours and flee to higher ground now. Do not go back.”
A tsunami warning from Honshu to Tokyo was cancelled, with only two people hurt.
There were three aftershocks of 6.2, 5.5 and 4.7 magnitude.
English teacher John Heritage told the BBC: 'We're at an evacuation centre waiting to hear what to do next.'

Earthquake hits off Indonesia coast at 8.7 Magnitude Earthquake On April 11, 2012
Jakarta, Indonesia -- A massive earthquake struck off the coast of the Indonesian island of Sumatra on Wednesday afternoon, triggering a tsunami alert for the Indian Ocean.
The quake struck about 434 kilometers (270 miles) southwest of Banda Aceh, the capital of Indonesia's Aceh province, and had a magnitude of 8.6, the U.S. Geological Survey said. It took place at a depth of 23 kilometers (14 miles).
The tremor revived fearful memories of the catastrophic earthquake and tsunami in the region in 2004 that killed tens of thousands of people.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said Wednesday that it had issued a tsunami watch for the entire Indian Ocean, and the Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency said it had put up a tsunami warning.
The Indonesian president, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, said on local television that there were no reports of casualties or damage in Aceh so far.
The areas most at risk of a tsunami are coastal areas of Aceh, particularly the island of Simeulue, Prih Harjadi, an official for the Indonesian geophysics agency said on Metro TV.
The earthquake appears to have involved a horizontal movement rather than a vertical movement, so it is less likely that it will generate a tsunami, said Gary Gibson from the Seismology Research Center in Melbourne, A
