While the 2021 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) hasn’t reached a conclusion yet, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) have started their preparation for the 2022 season. The gala T20 league will undergo much transition next season which also includes tournament expansion. Two new franchises are set to come into the picture, making IPL a 10-team event. Hence, it would be interesting to see what the change in the system will result in.
For the unversed, more than eight teams have taken part in IPL before. The 2011 season also 10 saw sides fighting it out for the prestigious title while the next two editions were a nine-team event. The competition was further reduced to eight teams in the 2014 season and since then there haven’t been any changes in the number of sides. However, dynamics are set to change again for the upcoming season.
Notably, BCCI is also planning to conduct a mega auction for IPL 2022 which would see all the existing sides going under revamp. The Indian cricket board has reportedly finalized player retention rules. Earlier, three players were allowed to retain while there were two right-to-match (RTM) options.
Player retention for IPL 2022
As per the Times of India, however, four players can be retained by each franchise ahead of the 2022 bidding event. However, the condition is either a team can retain three Indians and one overseas player or two Indians and as many foreign stars.
Speaking of the 2021 competition, the gala tournament was scheduled to take place in April-May. However, the widely-spreading COVID-19 virus forced BCCI to suspend the tournament midway on May 4. The remaining matches will now take place in the United Arab Emirates in September and October. However, the going won’t be smooth for many teams as several foreign stars are expected to pull out of the tournament with the T20 World Cup commencing days after IPL’s conclusion.

The IPL 2022 mega auction is around the corner. The two-day event will be held on February 12 and 13 in Bengaluru. While many of the players from India as well as across the globe have registered their names for the mega auction, there have been some who have decided to back out due to some reason or the other and one of them is New Zealand pacer Kyle Jamieson.
Jamieson had represented the Royal Challengers in IPL 2021. In fact, the tall pacer was also the second-most expensive buy at last year’s IPL auction as he was roped in by the RCB for a sum of INR 15 crore. The speedster has made himself unavailable for the 2022 season of the marquee tournament as he wishes to spend six-eight weeks at home in the next 12 months.
“Yeah, look, there were a couple of things for me. Firstly, after the last 12 months, it’s had its challenges with MIQs (managed isolation and quarantine) and bubbles and spending a fair amount of time in that sort of set-up. It was important for me when I look at the schedule coming up over the next 12 months to try and find six weeks or eight weeks where I can spend some time at home”, said Jamieson.
“The second thing for me was, reflecting over the last 12-24 months and understanding that I’m very young in my [international] career and only two years in, that I wanted to have time to work on my game. I guess I didn’t really feel like I was where I wanted to be and if I want to compete for spots in the New Zealand sides moving forward across all three formats, I actually need to spend time working on my game and not just trying to play the whole time. Yeah, for me it was just about time at home and just time to work on my game”, he added.
The preparations for the 15th edition of IPL are going full throttle to make it a successful event once again. However, with the addition of two new teams, the tournament is expected to be more exciting and thrilling which in turn will produce a great mega auction in February too

David Warner missing out from the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) dug out in the last two games of the ongoing second leg of IPL 2021 has been a mystery. Earlier in the season, he was stripped off captaincy and subsequently dropped from the playing XI too. But with Jonny Bairstow pulling out, it was yet another chance for Warner to stake his claim at the top of the order.
However, he couldn’t score many runs in the first two matches of the second leg. This led to the SRH management dropping him for Jason Roy. Many weren’t surprised about the left-hander getting dropped but what stuck everyone’s mind was his absence from the dug out.
Add to it, David Warner, responding to a comment on stay, he won’t be a part of SRH XI anymore which hinted that all is not well between him and the management at the moment. Many had doubts about the same when he was axed from captaincy earlier in the season.
The debate intensified further on Thursday (September 30), when the Australian opener posted a cryptic message on his Instagram story. “It’s not about who is real to you face, it’s about who stays real behind your back,” the message in the story read.
Former India and Delhi Capitals opener Virender Sehwag reckons that Sunrisers Hyderabad need not retain any bowler from their current contingent ahead of the IPL mega auction, scheduled in 2022.
However, Sehwag does feel that if the teams are allowed to retain foreign players, then the SRH management must ensure to not release Afghanistan leg-spinner Rashid Khan, whose stocks in every format of the game have been on a constant upward trend ever since the start of his professional career.
“From these bowlers [current SRH players] I would not retain even a single one, not even Bhuvneshwar Kumar. I agree that he will be playing for India, he is a brilliant T20 bowler, but if SRH has to retain only one bowler, the amount of money (INR 15-16 crores) they will have to spend would be way too mu

All 10 Indian Premier League (IPL) franchises would be busy brainstorming with the mega auction for the 2022 tournament being around the corner. The bidding event will take place on February 12 and 13 in Bengaluru. As many as 590 players will go under the hammer and it would be interesting to see how the final squads would look like.
Veteran leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal is one of the most sought-after players taking part in IPL 2022 mega auction this year. In fact, many were surprised when Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) didn’t retain him ahead of the event. After all, he had been a vital part of the team’s bowling unit since the 2014 season. As the leg-spinner is a proven T20 star now, many franchises are likely to break the bank for him.
Australia are scheduled to tour Pakistan in next month for the first time since 1998. The two teams are set to face each other in three Tests, as many ODIs and a solitary T20 International with the tour starting from March 3. With England and New Zealand canceling their tours to Pakistan last year, Australia traveling successfully for a full-fledged tour will be a huge thing for the regular revival of international cricket in the country.
Cricket Australia (CA) has been pretty much committed to fulfilling the tour but pacer Josh Hazlewood has said that he will not be surprised if some of his teammates pull out. He acknowledged the work being done by CA and Australia Cricketers Association (ACA) but felt that the final decision to tour will be in players’ hands who might decide not to tour eventually.
The IPL 2022 mega auction is all set to take place in Bangalore during 12-13 February and a total of 590 players are set to go under the hammer in the showpiece event. With two franchises joining the contest, the 15th edition of IPL is expected to be an exciting affair. It remains to be seen how teams will walk up with their strategies to get the right picks in the mega auction with their remainin
