The UPA government on February 17, 2014 accepted the 'one rank, one pension' principle for the armed forces in the interim budget presented in Parliament. Congress Vice-President Rahul Gandhi welcomed the decision and thanked Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh and Congress President Smt. Sonia Gandhi for fulfilling a long-standing demand of ex-servicemen. 'Our Jawans protect us on our borders, on distant mountains and we owe it to them. Jawans should always feel that the government is fully with them, this is our belief,' he further said.
The decision is the culmination of a series of interactions Rahul Gandhi has had with former military personnel. When the demand came up during his meeting with ex-servicemen on February 14, 2014, he said 'I am with you...you give your life for this country. Whatever effort I can give in this, I am going to do it'.\

वन रैंक वन पेंशन की मांग को लेकर एक रिटायर्ड सैनिक ने राजधानी में ज़हर खाकर आत्महत्या कर ली है। दरअसल मृतक पूर्व सैनिक रामकिशन ग्रेवाल वन रैंक-वन पेंशन मुद्दे पर सरकार के फैसले से संतुष्ट नहीं थे, जिसके चलते रामकिशन और उनके कुछ साथी सोमवार से जंतर-मंतर पर धरना दे रहे थे। लेकिन मांगों पर गौर नहीं किए जाने से नाराज़ रामकिशन ने खुदकुशी का फैसला लिया... आत्महत्या से पहले रामकिशन ने एक सुसाइड नोट भी लिखा था। जिसमें उन्होंने लिखा कि, मैं अपने देश, मातृभूमि और जवानों के लिए अपने प्राण न्योछावर कर रहा हूं। वहीं रामकिशन के छोटे बेटे ने बताया कि उसके पिता ने खुद इस बात की सूचना उसे फोन पर दी थी। परिजनों की माने तो मंगलवार दोपहर रामकिशन अपने साथियों के साथ अपनी मांगों को लेकर रक्षामंत्री मनोहर पर्रिकर से मिलने जा रहे थे, लेकिन रास्ते में ही उन्होंने ने जहर खा लिया। आनन-फानन में रामकिशन को राम मनोहर लोहिया अस्पताल भर्ती कराया गया जहां इलाज के दौरान रामकिशन की मौत हो गई।वहीं अब इस मामले पर सियासत भी शुरू हो गई है। दिल्ली के मुख्यमंत्री अरविंद केजरीवाल ने इस मुद्दे को लेकर सीधे मोदी सरकार पर निशाना साधा है। ट्वीट कर केजरीवाल ने कहा कि मोदी राज में किसान और जवान दोनो आत्महत्या कर रहे हैं। अरविंद केजरीवाल इस घटना के बाद पीड़ित परिवार से मिलने भिवानी जाएंगे...दूसरी तरफ रक्षा मंत्री ने इस मामले पर रिपोर्ट मांगी है।
