The 2022 Asia Cup may need to be shifted out of Sri Lanka in the aftermath of the political unrest in the Island nation. While Sri Lanka Cricket have remained confident of their ability to stage the six-team event despite the severe turbulence on both political and economic fronts, the rapid escalation of unrest in the country, which has seen its President fleeing recently and widespread protests amongst other catastrophes, seems to have forced the stakeholders to look at other options, with the United Arab Emirates emerging as one of the frontrunners to host the event.
Recent reports suggest that the member boards of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) have already started considering the alternative route as discussions are underway with the Emirates Cricket Board (ECB) in the UAE. The six-team event is slated to be played from August 27 to September 11, with Hong Kong, Kuwait, Singapore and UAE set to play the Qualifier before the main event, which will involve Afghanistan, Bangladesh, India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka and the Qualifier topper.
“In such a scenario, it is being felt that hosting the championship is not appropriate,” a member of the ACC told Cricbuzz on Saturday (July 16).
It is pertinent to note that Sri Lanka successfully hosted Australia in an extensive all-format tour while it is currently hosting Pakistan for two Tests. Meanwhile, even as the UAE is understandably being looked at as a potential host, battling the heat in the desert will remain one of the biggest challenges for the organisers given the timing of the tournament.
Amidst the recent developments, Pakistan Cricket Board’s (PCB) recent take remains a glimmer of hope for the SLC. “Our first preference is to support Sri Lanka and play the Asia Cup there. If this tournament does not take place in Sri Lanka, it will be a huge cricketing and financial loss for them. Australia’s recent tour of Sri Lanka went off without any problems,” Faisal Hasnain, PCB CEO, sa.

On May 19, Wednesday, the 2021 edition of the Asia Cup was cancelled in the wake of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. The tournament was scheduled to be hosted in June 2021 in Sri Lanka, however, the authorities took the hard call of cancelling the tournament after the Island nation reported an alarming number of positive coronavirus cases daily.
The current edition of the tournament was supposed to be played in T20 format, unlike the regular 50-overs, to ensure for all the participating teams a chance to prepare for the ICC T20 World Cup. India is scheduled to host the 2021 edition of the T20 World Cup in October this year.
The Sourav Ganguly– Greg Chappell saga is one of the darkest episodes in Indian cricket. Chappell was Team India’s head coach between 2005 and 2007, and his tenure was marred with controversies. While the former Australian captain had fallouts with many Indian players, his dispute with the then national captain Ganguly bagged the most limelight. The bad blood between the two even resulted in Sourav losing his captaincy and getting dropped from the side.
While it has been a decade since the controversial episode happened, Chappell has reignited the chapter by making some massive allegations against Ganguly. Calling his tenure as Team India coach challenging, the former Australian batsman claimed that Ganguly didn’t work hard and wasn’t keen to improve his game. Chappell even stated that the southpaw just wanted to remain captain to control things.
Former Indian cricketer Rahul Dravid will most probably be the coach for the team on their tour to Sri Lanka as regular coach Ravi Shastri will be away with the squad for the ICC World Test Championship final and the following five-match Test series against England. This is only the second incidence of India playing two series simultaneously.

BCCI President Sourav Ganguly on Thursday confirmed that the Asia Cup has been shifted to UAE, from Sri Lanka, amidst the political and economic unrest in the island nation. The Asian Cricket Council and the concerned board had been in talks for quite some time regarding the matter. Ganguly confirmed the developments after the board’s Apex Council meeting.
In a piece of great news for the Indian cricket fans, BCCI President Sourav Ganguly announced that India will host South Africa and Australia for a three-match T20I series each, ahead of the T20 World Cup 2022, which is set to begin on October 16. The T20Is will be a major boost for the teams and will help them in the preparations.
The BCCI intends to boost the prize money for its major domestic competitions, including the Ranji Trophy, whose winner will now receive a sumptuous INR 2 crore. The board’s staggering revenue of INR 48,390 crore from the auction of IPL media rights is said to have prompted the move.

Sri Lanka To Miss Out On Asia Cup And More Cricket News
Sports video | 38626 views
The Sri Lanka cricket board wants to start the Asia Cup on the changed dates of August 24 to September 7, 2022 and has asked participating countries for their consent. It may be noted that the 18th edition of the Asia Cup has already been postponed twice and is now expected to start on August 24 in Sri Lanka.
A total of six teams including Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, hosts Sri Lanka, and one of the qualifiers will compete against each other, with the final match to be played on September 7. Asia Cup usually alternates between ODI and T20 cricket formats and was last played in 2018, with India winning that edition.
The 2020 edition of the Asia Cup was to be hosted by Sri Lanka. However, the Covid-19 pandemic ruined everyone’s plans and the competition was first pushed to 2021, before being moved again to 2022. With the Sri Lanka board wanting to start the Asia Cup on August 24, it has received support from Pakistan.
“Adjustments in the dates are made following a request received by the SL Board from a couple of participating teams including Pakistan on the possible clash of international fixtures. Pakistan is to host England for seven T20 Internationals in the latter part of September” a source told The News.
“If Asia Cup goes ahead on the new dates of August 24 and ends on September 7, it would be perfect dates from Pakistan’s perspective as the team will be back home well in time for the start of the T20 series against England,” the source added.
To note, Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has the hosting rights for the 2023 Asia Cup and a total of six teams will participate in the next edition as well. Meanwhile, the Men in Green have a packed schedule till the 2022 T20 World Cup as they will play against West Indies, Netherlands, and England as well.

A few days back, Sourav Ganguly, the president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced that the Indian team will be traveling to Sri Lanka in July for a limited-overs series. As per Sri Lanka Cricket’s proposed itinerary to the BCCI, the tour is scheduled to start with a three-match One Day series on July 13, 16, and 19.The One Day series will be followed by three T20 Internationals that will be hosted on July 22, 24, and 27. SLC has decided to host all the matches at R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo in a bio-secure bubble to ensure the safety of the players and other members involved in the wake of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
Adding to the misery, the tally of the past week reads 16342 positive cases and 147 deaths. The rapid spread of the deadly virus in the Island nation can put the India tour of Sri Lanka in jeopardy. Sri Lanka Cricket officials are also worried about the cancellation of the Indian tour as Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) CEO Ashley De Silva admitted that Covid-19 cases are a matter of concern.
